gametes are sex cells. they produce the diploid number when the gamete (sperm) containing the haploid number (half the chromosomes) combine with an ova (egg) (containing half the number of chromosomes). when they combine, the halves add up, thus diploid number is restored.

male gametes are usually small and motile (spermatozoa)

female gametes (oocytes) are larger and nonmotile....

When two gametes fuse (sperm and egg), they form a zygote—a cell that has two complete sets of chromosomes and therefore is diploid.

Gametes are sex cell, ( sperm and ova) Each has half the compliment of chromosomes, When they unite in fertilization their two sets of chromosomes unite and form a complet unit or "zygote"
