It's an assignment, and it has to do something with energy or the environement. No magical world. it has to be realistic but for the purpose of the assignment, my teacher said that it could have a time travel device.

I have the setting:

I was thinking about a guy that lives in a world that is so polluted that the world has built some sort of environement in which we basially live in plastic tunnels throughout the city, like subways for people to walk, drive, etc.most of the animals are extincts except for the ones kept in the city zoos. A lot of people have been killed by storms. Most of New England has been flooded and the character moves to someplace, maybe new york where it constantly snows now. The global weather is all screwed up. Oil has become so scare that people flee to Alaska, the only source left like people searching for gold in CA in the 1800s.
All the people outside the tunnels are basically suffering because the environment is so intoxicating it is killing ppl.

Well, my problem is that I don't have a problem for the story. I bascially begin the story about how my character is remembering how it was to live in our world before lving in the plastic tunnels.

Sounds like a huge hamster habitat. I guess it keeps people safe, but it's awfully confining.

Maybe the guy finally can't take it and leaves the hamster trails just long enough to see the sky before it chokes him to death. Kinda like The Lady of Shalott--she's sick of living in her tower, so she gets in a boat and floats away rather than live trapped all her life (she dies when she leaves the tower.)

The problem: People miss the old way of life, where they could enjoy the earth and appreciate it for its beauty. However, they are stuck. There's no going back now. They've used their resources; earth is devastated. The only solution is.....THE TIME MACHINE! If the government selects an elite group of men and women that can really go back in time and actually change the world, all will be recovered once again. How will these people change the world? Who will they influence? What inventions will they aim to thwart? The answers to these questions are where your real story lies.

Only a finite amount of room in the tunnels for people to live, so when population grows too much, someone has to go outside. Deal with how they choose who goes/stays. Violent criminals probably get the boot. You could weave an Orwellian go'vt into that real easy.

My simple answer to your story is just to live the present moment in the best possible way. God will do the rest of life's little problems through generous and concerned people. There will always be people who will do the best for us.
