I am a software developer and started sending out my resume to get a newer, better position. I thought that with my many years at this company, people would be interested. Well, nobody is. So, if a hard working, nice guy cannot better himself, why be a nice guy? Why not lie on my resume stating I have knowledge I do not? Maybe I should even dress in drag and become a pretty woman instead of a 50 something, honest man. Maybe I will get a better position with the sex appeal some women have. And, the problem isn't age because I am more youthful and sharper than most 40 year olds. Anyway, most of the software developers at my current company are in their 40's and 50's, and we even have a 70 year old who is great. The problem is my honesty. So, why live an honest life at all? How do the big shots get ahead and make millions while the rest of us play by the rules and are lucky just to remain employed? I am beginning to think that the real jerks become the big successes.

Hey! Stop beating yourself up! If you have mad skills, why not strike out on your own doing specifc jobs for a variety of companies on a contract basis? You might do even better than you ever dreamed. Also, as I'm sure you know, technology is always changing, so having been around a long while might not really be an asset. Consider taking some courses if there are new, popular areas of knowledge in which you are deficient. Finally, if you are 'honest to a fault' - like you actually tell people their haircut sucks, then you have got to learn to keep your trap shut. Try the books available at the website below for some additional practical ideas/plans for getting a job/career you'll enjoy & prosper in.

You're probably looking for the wrong types of ladies. The types that would go for bad guys. And besides, I don't think nice guys finish last, just weak guys. Nice guys can be strong too.

I know the difficulties and the frustrations involved and thus the temptation to throw away principles and virtue- which are really what define us. The world does seem to pay off such trade-offs and compromises. It's a hellacious world that would force some to choose between making a living ....and being able to live with yourself. Because- in the end- that's really it. In laying down your principles, your personal sense of morality- you may also lose your own self-respect. That's where people gain a good paycheck... and lose their love for life ...because they cannot stand themselves. I urge you to hold onto what is GOOD in your life and don't trade bad for good even if the pay is great.

Often times technical types seem more analytical. Sometimes you can catch more flies with honey than salt :) Perhaps, you should consider an image consultant or personal coach to assist you in learning to be more diplomatic. Even check with your local free newspapers for reasonable one evening courses. And sometimes its about confidence....and oh yeah, honesty is still the best policy but sometimes there is a way to say it!
