What would be the best way to distinguish between H. erectus, H. neanderthal, and H. sapiens?

you forgot to ask about the one that you actually are: homo sapien sapien.

and one of the major distinguishing factors is brain functionality. as the human-like being progressed, so did it's brain functioning. therefore, earlier beings, such as home erectus were essentially not able to have the same brain capacity as the later beings.

Erectus looks like the Geico Caveman. On the tall side, fairly sophisticated, intelligent, but somewhat overly sensitive with issues concerning his mother. Erectus was well traveled and pretty much covered the globe.

Neanderthalensis is shorter but stockier. He's got a prominent eyebrow ridge and would make a decent nosetackle. Neanderthal is believed to be descended from Erectus, but didn't get around as much. Neanderthal would have been found in Europe.

Sapiens, i.e. the man in the mirror, is Neanderthal's cousin and fellow descendant of Erectus. This guy is totally in love with himself. He thinks he can control the global climate, equates the end of the world with the extinction of humans, and believes that God created him in his image. This hairless monkey can be easily found at shopping malls while traveling in SUVs.

H. erectus is older, 1000cm3 brain size. H. Neanderthal is 2nd oldest, first to have ritual burials and 1450cm3 brain size and H. Sapiens is the youngest, the modern human and it created art.
