As on date there does not seem to be any possibility of such a situation in the near future. We require some alternate source of energy before saying bye-bye to gasoline or oil.And it seems the situation will continue for the next 40-50years. Alternate sources of energy being experimented include Hydrogen as fuel, Fuel cells, Bio diesel, Compressed Air, Solar energy, and helium-4 etc. all these sources are still in the nascent experimentation stage, and require time for testing their efficiency/utility/viability etc.

The stock market as we know it will crash and then the big boys with their big toys (they will have already been alerted to this and pulled their money out) will all have already taken their money and cornered the stock market on the alternatives that we've changed to. The only thing is that the rich will be protected and the poor joe will have lost everything that he's ever worked for. Just like what happened in 1929

The same thing that happened when horses were replaced by automobiles. All companies involved in oil will suddenly be worth less. OPEC will become useless as their monopoly would disappear.

Why hasn't it been done? Because nobody has found an economically viable replacement for fossil fuels yet.
