I'm not talking in terms of what the word actually means. I'm asking the modern connotation of the word. Thinking back to the Nelly Furtado song, which almost glorified promiscuity, is this term, becoming more positive?

I would have to say, unfortunately, yes. It doesn't carry the same degree of meaning or connotation it used to. Equally as alarming is the fact the word abstinence seems to be going in the opposite direction. Young ppl practically have to be admonished to abstain while it's generally "ok", almost expected, that they be promiscuous. One has only to look at the sad state of the elevated numbers of STDs, not to mention AIDS, and the unwed youthful mothers to see the results of that. It's sad. To quote Bob Dylan, the times truly are a-changin'! And I guess Thomas Wolfe really was right.

Excellent Q!!

No, what has happened is that people are lowering their standards and moral values have disenegrated into apathethic excuses, lack of self control and lies. It is still wrong to have sex before marriage and the biggest misconception of our time, is that it's ok. I don't see any postives there. Does anyone know the incredible value of being with your husband the first time, sharing intimacy with him the first time and not having memories of a life spent before meeting him? Virginity is not valued anymore...and that is pathetic.

Idiots get influenced by rap songs all the time. Think of the song "Grillz" and how having monstrous-looking teeth is SOO cool now. Think of how many pointless words we have now thanks to rap songs - "Shoulder Lean", "Ghostride the Hoop", countless others.

I wouldn't doubt there are teenage idiots out there being more "promiscuous" because of that damn song.

The term will never be positive, by nature. This is just another example of how sex is glorified.

I think kind of, yes. Like now it's meaning more having casual sex out of a playful, fun-filled nature, instead of like a cheap slutty way it used to mean. Good point!
