From its profits and the rate its stock has grown, a boon to America would be a better description, I guess. But that's only from the capitalistic perspective. I'm sure there are many detractors and not-so-happy-campers.

I think it an atrocity to America and an okay starter job. How can it be both you ask?

The same way immigration seems to be the best and worst thing to happen to America. We are all immigrants some way or another. But its not okay for immigrants to come in and scoop up "American" jobs. On the other hand, the economy thrives on low cost labor. Employers are more willing to hire when costs are low.

Which brings me back to the point: Wal-Mart is a great opportunity if you don't mind working hard for little dough. The company intentionally gears towards Americans who qualified or qualify for government assistance due to the Tax Breaks they receive. All companies do it to some degree or another but Wal-mart takes it to a whole other level. The prices are so low because the labor is cheap. Its a great place to shop but it proves just how twisted the American dream really is. Rise to the top at the risk of others.

Walmart is truly a mixed bag -- in rural areas they bring in things to folks who would otherwise have to go into the city. At the same time their prices are hard to beat, and they do provide some jobs and opportunity. On the other hand the mom and pops small town stores suffer because they don't have the selection and they can't compete with the price. I know from my own experience that I will buy certain things only at Walmart because of the price. I think it's a crime to go to a large department store and see something for $100.00 and Walmart has the exact same brand and model for $59.95. Another thing is that the Walmart price even beats the rebates which I hate anyway.

Though i am no expert all the whole deal, personally i think its good and bad depending on which direction you look at it.
Society benefits from Wallll-Marts,because the prices that they sell goods,is at a low price, giving the middle working close a chance to love a pretty decent life.
But then again small family business don't benefit from Wal-Mart because of all the competition they get from Wal Mart. And i think with a store like Wall mart eating all the local business. There is no room for innovation, and advancing.
Also Wal Mart isn't good for the enivoronment either.
Wal Mart can be either a negative and a postive depending on the direction that your pointing at.
yeahhhhhh......................

They are good employment opportunities for those just starting and others who have finished (kids and retirees). They offer no ''career employment'' for 20 somethings, which they should be thinking about at that point. As far as the older folks, they have already done career and are looking for a mindless task to fill their time, meet people and stay busy.

I think there is a place for large department stores, but I believe they dominate too much for our good. It's very difficult to make a living as a small retail business owner--I believe the government could make a few adjustments to make it more reasonable. This country was built on small business and it's a dieing American dream. I don't believe that is right at all, because it's choking/killing the entreprenurial spirit.

As I began, there is a place for them, but I don't believe they should have such dominance.

Walmart is great for the normal everyday joe. They are just really tough on smaller businesses. I like Wally World though.

Besides for Sam Walton its good for the bargain hunters, but a disaster for everyone else. From employees to American businesses going bankrupt, it's killing America's economy, the list goes on and on.

WalMart is the worst thing to happen to America. It kills the mom & pop stores. They outsource their work to underpaid chinese workers while stealing jobs from Americans. All so that you can save save save. In the end we really lose though.

Consumers are the artocity to america and the world. If we stop wanting and consuming so much we wouldn't need a Wal-Mart coorporation to pick on.
