I once knew a kid who was adopted from a foreign country. There was no family history available. He started having serious health problems and not knowing his genetic history, the diagnosis was slow and difficult. He had a prblem at the cell level which he takes medicine for and is ok now.

A pro would be that if you are predisposed to a certain ailment, you could do what you can to mitigate that predisposition. For example, if you know you are predisposed to cholesterol problems, you could watch your consumption of animal products. A con would be that the knowledge might cause you to worry too much about it or that it would keep you from doing things you might enjoy for fear of exacerating the potential problem.
