Because the home crowds wanted to see the 3rd jerseys that most teams were debuting. If the home team might wear white or colored, the visiting teams would have to travel with both white and colored jerseys on a road trip. If the home team wears dark or 3rd jerseys at home, then the visiting team only has to take one set of jerseys (white) on the whole road trip.

Because the NHL wanted to be more like the NFL which has the home teams wearing the darker colors. It was the worst decision ever. The NHL needs to switch it back. I still don't call the dark jerseys the home jerseys, and I never will.

The home crowds wanted to see the more elaborate and colorful "away" jerseys more often without traveling to an away game. The NHL and minor leagues decided that the colored jerseys would be better for the home team.

I think originally teams only had one sweater per player, and they just had team colors. The first Ottawa team was striped, if I recall. It was a lot like soccer in the fact that each team just had one uniform. Time took over and teams overlapped colors, so they made it white at home. I prefer the white jerseys at home. I still change them to white at home and dark on the road when playing NHL 2k7.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the dark jerseys originally worn at home. That's why the Rangers got the nickname "Broadway Blueshirts."
