She should go and apply for Emergency Medi-Cal that will cover her pregnancy and baby until 6 weeks after delivery for free. Since she is a student and only works part time, I am sure her income will fall within the income limits (which are higher for ER medi-cal, than the regular medi-cal) She should go to her local Social Services to apply. If she needs advice or help she can also seek advice and counseling from Planned Parenthood, they have one in almost every city across the country. She shouldn't worry about what people thinks, only what she thinks of herself and everything will work out. I had my first daughter when I was 23 and in school, it worked out fine for me. It will be harder work, but definitely possible to finish school and have a child if she puts her mind to it. Good Luck to your sister!

Same thing happened to me. I am only 19, but my boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years and I found out that I was pregnant in August. I had no job and no insurance (student), so I went to the local health unit and asked them what I needed to do. All you have to do is fill out some forms for Medicaid and WIC, and it's very easy to qualify if you don't make much money. Then find an OB doctor who accepts Medicaid-- my visits are NO cost to me-- even the sonograms are paid for. I felt the same way about being judged, but people are a lot more understanding than I expected them to be. Everything will be FINE!

There are all kinds of programs that can help her. Which ever state you livein she should look up numbers on the internet for insurance during pregnancy. maybe look into the Maternity Card (website listed below). She may just have to postpone college for a while or take fewer classes. She should not be judged. Sounds like yor sister has a good head on her shoulders and is actually trying to do something with her life. Going to college and working part time is very hard. I think she can still do it as long as she keeps her determination. Congrats for your sister and good luck in the near future!!

I'm 22 I finished my last semester of undergrad while pregnant and am in the middle of grad school. I was lucky and had health insurance.
She needs to apply for WIC as well as for financial aid at school and welfare...they will get her medical/medicade and help her out.
There will always be people who look down upon women who have babies out of wedlock. Just tell her to hold her head high and finish school. The baby will have a lot better life with a mom with a degree then a mom working as a waitess.

She can apply for financial aid based on the fact that next year she will be able to claim the baby. This will also open up the availability of goverment education loans based on need. They are unsubitized, which means the government pays the interest until after she is done with school. Also the minority federation still veiws women as a minority and will help with education through a masters degee.

If her income is under a certain amount, she might be able to get some assistance with the insurance issue. Have her ask at the Job & Family Services office or do some research on the Internet. Most of those offices have web sites for people who don't want to be "judged" by asking a lot of questions in public. Other than that, she needs to plan on having a lot of debt. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

Depending on the amount of income she recieves each month she could very well qualify for Medicaid.. Find a local Department of Human Services, and apply. They should let her know quickly if she qualifys for the bennifits... Oh but be sure she is pregnant first, and bring a paper stating so from a clinic or somewhere.... And noone should judge her because of her age. There are girls out there that are still in high school having babies...

There should be some kind of state funded insurance that she would be eligible for. In Oklahoma, we have Soonercare. It pays for everything if you fall in the right income bracket - I'm sure most states have the same thing. If she asks at a doctors visit, or at a health department they should be able to give her the forms to fill out then. Your sister shouldn't worry about what people think - she should worry about herself and the baby. I worried about what people thought (I'm a college student too) and I didn't enjoy my pregnancy at all.

She should be able to get on Medicaid. It is VERY expensive to have a baby w/out this or any insurance; I'm going through it right now.

She can get welfare and health coverage through the state and federal government, continue to work part time until she goes on disability to have the baby, take online courses if she has to, and put the baby up for adoption.

Then her baby has a chance at the life she gave it, instead of her taking that away and feeling miserable.
