In today's unified and fickle world of non-regional wrestling, such a thing would be unprecedented. People get sick of champions fast these days. You'd be lucky to see a champion make it a year with the title anymore. I personally think, with enough storyline backing him, and enough interesting challenges, twists, and turns along the way, Chris Jericho could accomplish this. He's someone the smarks love for his in-ring style and unpredictable mic time. He's someone the marks love to side with or go against (depending on if he's a heel or a face). He's also a believable champion, especially if he's a heel. The best way to do this, is the same way they lined him up against Triple H for the unified titles. Jericho spent at least a month running from a match with Triple H. He did everything possible not to be in the same ring, arena, city, or state as the Game. He went so far as to do a pool side interview via satellite at his home in Florida to stay away from Hunter. He'd be the most likely person to hold it and stay over, even if it meant turning on occasions, or running for the duration of 2 years throughout the 8+ year reign.

Another thing you must understand about Sammartino's run is, it was back when every defense wasn't televised, half the states didn't know who the world champ was, and when they finally did they weren't sure if they wanted to cheer for him or not until about three years into his run. Regional wrestling's just a whole different ball game. The reason titles were held so long was because people rarely got to see shows, so they couldn't get sick of seeing a champion. Nowadays, television shows who the champion is world wide.

Nope, because the attention span of the modern day wrestling fan is way too short and could never stand to see the same guy stay as champion for longer than a year at most before they start cheering for someone else. Hell, they start chanting "boring" at the get go for some wrestlers.

No too much talent on the roster now, not like 20 people on RAW like there was in the 70's.

WWE or TNA won't do it, because people have much shorter attention spans now. Thats why RVD and Mysterio got such short reigns. I know, it sucks.
