Try defragging and a good disk clean-up. Delete or uninstall software or programs you don't use, like old videogames you don't play anymore.

If that doesn't help very much, and it isn't going to bother your gameplay, turn all the video options to their lowest settings, or at least to the lowest settings at which you're willing to play the game. If you have custom content in your game, and you don't use some of it ever, try going through and deleting any custom content you don't use.

As far as buying new hardware, if it comes to that, you should probably go for a RAM upgrade first. A new video card might help as well.

Hi - not sure if this will help or not but I make all the programs that normally run in the background stop before I play the Sims 2. Which means, that after I'm finished, if I want to do anything else on my pc, then I have to re-boot.

It's a bit of a pain but it normally means I get a problem free game on the Sims 2.

Press CTL ALT Del all at once to get the Windows Task Manager box up. Click on Processes. The Click on User Name to sort the processes by user name.

Click on a process & then right click & chose end process. Do this for the ones that relate to the User Name that you are using only. DO NOT END PROCESS ON explorer.exe or taskmgr.exe. You can stop all the others.

Then just put your Sims2 disk into the drive - fingers crossed that it'll start running faster.

Good luck.

When I play my sims I simply open the task manager with ctrl alt delete then click on processes and delete everything that is running under hp owner except explorer.exe. Do not delete any of the system stuff. This does help somewhat.

You could go into the game and under the graphics option you could make everything low quality. Try it before you buy anything new...
