My sister is almost 21 weeks pregnant with her second child. She had an ultrasound a week ago and it revealed that the baby was a boy. The other day, her doctor called her and told her that they want to make sure they get another ultrasound next time she goes to the doctor, (she wasn't normally scheduled for an ultrasound then) because her placenta is pressing up against her bladder. The doctor said it's nothing to be concerned about, they just want to keep an eye on it and that most of the time, it corrects itself. Does anyone know anything about this or what it means? Or does anyone know any websites where I could learn more about this. I appreciate any help. Thank you..

The placenta has a place were the circulatory system of the baby connects to the uterine wall ( via the umbilicus). The point of connection ( the cervical os) is of great importance because that is were the baby gets is food, oxygen, disposes of waste and CO2, There are conditions where the cervical os is too close to the opening of the uterus, the cervical os detaches, and other conditions that require a little closer observation.

Most of the time these conditions do correct themselves, but not always.

( I'm an RN)

She may have what they call placenta previa, which means the placenta is down where the baby will need to be when it's time to deliver. They generally do keep an eye on that situation, because if the placenta does not move on it's own before active labor starts, it interferes with the birth process, and a cesarian may need to be done. Usually, the placenta does move on it's own though. The doctors are right to be cautious! It is generally not serious.

That doesnt make any sense to me what-so-ever. The whole uterus presses against the bladder when you're pregnant, and iam not sure why or really how, the placenta being in that area changes things.

It is called placenta previa, and it also can press against the utrerine wall.... hope this helps...

It is true though that most of the time the placenta will lift off of it on its own by the end of the pregnancy...
