In Greece it was the ''Golden century of Pericles''.If you read about it you'll find out that it was a very progressive time.You will actually be impressed because they were more civilised and progressed than a thousand and more years later..I think it was the time of spiritual blooming of the mankind.I do not mean technology.I mean philosophy.Life philosophy,every day philoshophy,philosophy about human(soul,body etc.).Their philosophy is also nowadays,our philosophy.Most of us believe in it till today..
Anyway,I don't think I really answered your question.But 510 b.c was Pericles time in Greece and that was this century known for..So if you want to know more about it learn about the ''Golden Age''.

It depended on where you lived. In most places they probably had a better life (except for modern medicine) than many in the third world today. Here is a link that describes ancient life in various parts of the world,

Everybody was smelly because they didn't have soap. There were many diseases that could not be cured. There was a lot of cruelty because people haven't learned yet to appreciate human life and dignity. In short, it was a disgusting time to live.
