Wow you will be living over the mountain from us!
I do not mind a southern accident . I do not mind people from the south at all, I just have no interest to move down there....You will find we are a opened minded bunch for the most part, also politically wise....
The lack of education, I don't think this. Just matters if you cut your words (taking off the ending), or using the slang I have herd some southerners do. This talk does not make sense.
I hate fake southern accents, this is ramped in the cowboy, rodeo circles. You will find some people up here try to talk with southern accents and it is laughable!
You will get a lot of good attention I think.....
My family is from Pennsylvania, except me and a brother. People gave me crap as a kid for I would use words my other family members use that is not known to people up here, no dictionary has the words.....I would constantly be asked where I was from, and I am born and raised Oregonian!
One great thing about Oregon is, the cities are known to be tolerant of others. These small towns are a little more suspicious of newbies..... We have cities just might not be what you are used too? Five thousand people is a city to me! For heavens sakes do not be speeding with out of state plates, you will get stopped.
Hope you like it here! ....good luck with the move!

Please bear in mind that the north is populated by a vast number of people, each with the capacity to form his or her own opinions on a wide range of topics.
You will find that some people in the north dislike some southern accents while enjoying others, and that some people in the north regard southern accents as rather appealing and that some people in the north don't like southern accents at al.
One of the most educated men I'd ever met spoke with a very heavy Alabama accent, so personally, I tend to pay more attention to the content of the speech than the accent.
Enjoy Portland. It's a lovely place, and I wish you all the best in your new home.

No.... I am from the north and quite a few of the people in the southern state come from the north. While I was down in Georgia, I did not notice any difference in the way we speak.

I'm from the NE, not the NW, but I find Southern accents to be endearing, as long as the person is charming. If the person acts like an idiot then the accent does not help matters.

I don't mind the southern accent. I find it cute! I'm in California....I know that many other Californians associate the southern accent with 'red-neck' type people. But not everyone feels this way.

I live in Minnesota and we don't hate the accents, per se. However, we still maintain that we are the only ones without an accent and will mock anybody that has one. It's not meant to be cruel, just kind of funny. Like "ha, ha, ha, MN rocks."

i have relatives who live in the south, and it is just a real pet peeve of mine. I don't know why the drawling vowels get on my nerves so much, but they do. it doesn't help that our president (who i don't much care for) has one. he kind of gives southerners a bad name. no offense if you are a republican.
Buuuut... then i think of how sweet, and slightly insane, and delightful my relatives are. eventually i forget the accent and pay attention to the person inside. so, once you make some friends, they may make fun of your accent at first, but once they got to know you... they'll forget your accent and like you for your insides.

Michigan here.
One of the smartest people I know hails from Huntsville, Alabama. People will sound smart or stupid outside of their accent. Dr. Phil sounds like an idiot because he is an idiot, not because he has a Dallas twang.
