It was Ngaio Marsh-- the character is Inspector Roderick Alleyn (no final 'e") and his wife was the painter, Agatha Troy. They were excellent books.

Margery Allingham also wrote excellent mysteries, but perhaps slightly earlier than Marsh. Her detective was Albert Campion, more in the Lord Peter Wimsy mold.

Ngaio Marsh - I think she was from New Zealand
