I can think of several incidents, but the first one that came to mind with your question was a car accident when I was 18. An older lady ran a stop sign, and I wasn't able to stop in time to keep from hitting her. I was driving a 1968 Mustang that had been my graduation present (used, but still...!), and it was totaled. Once my car finally came to a stop - only a few seconds, I'm sure, but it seemed to go on FOREVER - my door was jammed, and I couldn't get out; I managed to get out the passenger door.

I can still replay the accident in my head today, at age 52; it's like a slow-motion tape, and I suspect it will remain vivid for the rest of my life. Fortunately, I only received a few bruises thanks to a seat belt, and the other driver was simply shaken up, as was her passenger.

Being robbed at gunpoint. I used to work at an ice cream parlor and it was 3 more minutes to closing. A customer ordered ice cream and instead of paying for it, he pulled out a gun. I heard my coworker empty out the cash till. I asked what was she doing, that was when I saw the gun. Not only did he take the store's money, he took money from our wallets, and demanded the safe money. After he realized that neither of us had access to the safe, he told us to lie on the ground face down. I thought he was going to pull the trigger. Luckily me and my coworker are still around. Never again am I working the night shift and going through this horrow again.

Almost getting creamed by two CH-47 Chinook helicopters. We were out doing NVG training in Korea, and had just finished the training mission. We had to land at Camp Casey, drop off a passenger, then hop over the road to Camp Mobile to park. We took our NVG's off for the hop (it was literally about a two minute flight), pulled pitch, and then suddenly we saw BLACK SHAPE...BLACK SHAPE go past the nose of the aircraft about 200 feet away. Turned out it was two CH-47's also doing night vision goggle training, and they didn't see us. (In their defense, I don't think we ever made a radio call when we took off).

Closest I ever came to dying.
