Here are a couple tips that I have found:

Bring magazines, card games, or crossword puzzles to keep your mind occupied.

Try different positions. Try sitting or standing, squatting, lying on your side, or crouching on your hands and knees. Try sitting on the toilet. Move around, change positions, find whatever position is comfortable and helps you get through the contractions.

Take a warm bath or shower in your birthing room.

Relaxation is one of the most helpful techniques for pain relief.

Breathe easy
Focused, deep breathing can calm you down in the first stage of labor.

Visualize less pain
Creating a mental picture of your birth ahead of time -- and thinking through any fears you have about delivery-- can help you handle pain.

The following are some suggestions to try for relaxing.

* Massage
* bathing or showering
* listening to music
* deep breathing
* meditation
* Yoga poses
* visualization

You will be so excited that the pain will be minor. People say that labor pain is the easiest pain to forget because you get something out of it. Just think positive, "Im almost there, my baby is almost here", Picture your baby and go for it!

I would have a good labor coach, that is a must, someone who is positive and helpful. Also on breathing, your dr can help you on that but just take LONG DEEP breaths and take a HUGE breath before you push.

The epidural will help a ton, you will barely even feel pain, only pressure!

Don't break your waters as suggested, wait unitl about 7 cm for that. Once the water is broken you will be given 24 hours to deliver. If you don't deliver in that time, you will be sent in for a c-section. As a doula, I suggest LaborBoost Labor Cream or Balm. Our doula group and midwives have seen this work effectively to get active labor patterns within 8 hours of application. This cream method is recommended over castor oil because it does not cause diarrhea. We have seen a 90% success rate, when the cervix is ready for labor. Happy Birthing!

Just breathe during the early stages of labor! Have a normal conversation with your labor partner or read and when you feel a contraction coming on, you'll most likely be relaxed and will have little problem getting through it. Also, if you haven't gone to the hospital yet and your water hasn't broken, try a warm bath. I did both these things during my early stages of labor and it really did wonders for me.

Try to not tense up in the contractions, it makes them hurt more even though you'd think the opposite. Just because you had back labor this time, doesn't necessarily mean you'll have it when you're in labor next time. You'll love that epidural!

The best thing do is to breath through the pain. For myself I would take a long breath in then a long breath out. I didn't go to any classes either. It was pretty easy for me -
Good luck to you

By the Way
One thing that did help was that I kept telling myself ...
"This time tomorrow, he'll be in my arms"

slow even breaths. demand dimoral & epidural!! i had 2 epidurals before my c-section & neither worked, due to a high medication tolerance i have. it takes the edge of some. music might help calm/relax you.
