i went there several years ago. it's a beautiful area that is not frequented by too many tourists yet. my guidebook suggested hitting beaches either furthest east or furthest west, but to avoid the middle areas. i found this to be true. the middle areas are kind of sketchy. we went furthest east to a little beach town called salema. it was fantastic!! it's very quaint and quiet. we rented a little apartment atop a hill overlooking the ocean, and it was just wonderful. i can't remember the name of the lodge. just go to a bookstore and find rick steve's guide to portugal (or the algarves).

For starters the National Tourism website can help a lot.

Then once you have an idea of location a regional directory of hotels and accommodation sorted by price, stars, location at the last minute or in advance is available on the links below.

May isn't too heavily booked, so I'd recommend booking you main places first and then filling them in with deals at shorter notice, provided you're not visiting during a holiday or an event.

Anyway, hopefully these links will give you some ideas ( and dig into the current last minute deals to see what might work for you ).

Good luck with your plans.
