if you have uptodate antivirus and anti spyware installed run full tests
if you aint got any then i would reccomend AVG and spybot as a good start if that dont find anything then youve probably loaded up software in the past thats clogged up the old registry with start up programs and the like you can get registry cleaner programs but if you dont know what your doing then you could make things even worse
I did a computer for someone the other day and they had over 600 defunct registry entries and 150 types of adware plus a lot of startup programs it was taking 6 minitues to get the home page up
the best option for you would then be to format the hdd and reinstall your operating system and start afresh
Do make sure you have any special drivers for your system
for the video card sound card mainboard as sometimes just installing the operating system is not the only thing needed
also dont forget your internet installation disk as all will be lost on your fresh installation
if you have all the original installation disks your half way there

good luck

Defragment your hard drive. Start it before you go to work, wait for it to "analyse", which takes about 30 mins, and then set it to defrag. This can take over 7 hours, which it once took me to do.

Remove all programs and applications you dont need from your computer.

Add more RAM, normally double it up. So if you have 256MB RAM, double it to 512MB, and if you have 512MB, double it up to 1024MB (1GB).

This is what I do, and it has always worked for me.

If all else fails take your computer to the nearest skyscraper, climb to the top of it and throw the computer down and head down to PC World, or build your own for half the price.

Here's a few things you can try..........

Download, Update and Run Ad-Aware (google "Ad-aware lavasoft download.com") and you should find it easy.

Also download and run Spybot - (google "spybot s&d download.com) you should find it easy enough.

Also click Start > Run > type cmd > hit OK > type chkdsk /f and hit enter - when it says it'll run after your next restart type yes and hit enter - restart your computer.

Also click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > scroll dow the list and find anything that you don't use anymore and click it then select 'change/remove' and uninstall it.

Also click Start > Run > type msconfig > hit OK > click the tab at the end called 'Startup' > look down that list and deselect anystuff that you don't really need starting when you boot up your computer (stuff like VirusScan you'll - but you wont want things like windows media player/itunes; quicktime; msn or stuff like that)

Hope it helps.

......oh yeh - delete all your temporary internet files and history (in Internet Explorer click Tools > Internet Options > and do 'Delete Cookies' and 'Delete Files' and 'Clear History'.

format your hardrive and reinstall windows. thats the fastest and simplest way to get your computer running fast again.

you didn't really give a specific question, or say what it was that is making your computer slow...

you could do a disk defragment too
go to:
Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragment

Delete unwanted files
Defragment disk

Remove all spyware.

Still slow? Then re-write hard-drive. You will need to back everything up and then re-install windows.

Still slow? Buy a new one, i'm afraid...

Go to Start - Run - then type 'msconfig'
Under start up tab, deselect all non essential programmes, then restart.
To further improve it, defragment the hard drive.
