solve for r.

r=(14,309.61/10,000)^1/5

Just in case my symbols are off, I will explain. The ^ symbol is means there is an exponent. So in the problem above the fraction in the parathensis to the 1/5 power.

The fraction exponent is throwing me off big time.

Are you looking for the answer? Why don't you use a calculator? It's not very hard to do on a calculator. This is what I got. 1.07429996

the denominator in a fractional exponent calculates as a root

in other words, 4^1/2 =2

that is, 4 to the 1/2 power is the same as the square root of 4

27^1/3 is 3 (the cube root of 27 is 3)

27^2/3 is the square of the cube root of 27 (or 9)

calculators today generally will evaluate fractional exponents

the windows pseudo-calculator solves r above as:
1.074299 (with more or less significant figures)

a fractional exponent means that you need to find that number root of the primary number

for example

4^(1/2) = sqrt 4 = 2
81^(1/4) = fourth root of 81 = 3

so take the fifth root of 14309.61/10000 = fifth root of .1430961

don't have a calculator but there you go.

Any real number can be an exponent. To calculate this one, you will need a scientific calculator (Windows comes with one).

For the concept or a rational exponent, see the source.
