in terms of area, at 31,820 square miles, the largest freshwater lake in the world is Lake Superior, between the US and Canada.

however, in terms of volume, Lake Baikal, in Russia, takes the cake with 5521 cubic miles of water.

of course, if you count the Caspian Sea (between Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran) as a lake, it is much larger than either of them (143,250 sq. mi., 18,761 cub. mi.).

It's the caspian sea - It is a landlocked endorheic body of water and lies between Russia and Iran. It has a maximum depth of about 1025 meters (3,363 ft).
It is called a sea because when the Romans first arrived there, they tasted the water and found it to be salty.[4] It has a salt amount of approximately 1.2%, about a third the salt amounts of most water from the ocean.

This is the overall biggest lake in the world - but not freshwater. I'm not to sure if you wanted the biggest fresh water lake in the world or the biggest overall lake in the world - so i stated the biggest overall lake in the world.

Largest by continent

The largest lakes (surface area) by continent are:

- Africa - Lake Victoria, also the second largest freshwater lake on Earth. It is one of the Great Lakes of Africa.
- Antarctica - Lake Vostok (subglacial)
- Asia - Caspian Sea, also the largest on Earth.
-Australia - Lake Eyre
- Europe - Lake Ladoga, followed by Lake Onega, both located in northwestern Russia.
- North America - Lake Superior
- South America - Lake Titicaca, which is also the highest navigable body of water on Earth at 3,821 m above sea level.

The largest lake in the world is the Caspian Sea. Don't let the name fool you, its really a lake. Heres some info on it:

The Caspian Sea is the largest lake on Earth by both area and volume, with a surface area of 371,000 square kilometres (143,244 mi²) and a volume of 78,200 cubic kilometres (18,761 mi³). It is a landlocked endorheic body of water and lies between Russia and Iran. It has a maximum depth of about 1025 meters (3,363 ft). It is called a sea because when the Romans first arrived there, they tasted the water and found it to be salty. It has a salinity of approximately 1.2%, about a third the salinity of most water from the ocean.
