Have you ever watched yourself completely go through some activity, but it was like you were just sitting down and watching it all?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Yes, I have.

And what I'm talking about though, is not just like driving where you realize that you've just driven somewhere without thinking about it, but more like you are fully aware of everything happening, but it's as if another person is doing it.

I skate ski on auto pilot. Also when you are in a flow the same thing can happen with writing. My auto pilot works better with loud music in a headset while I am skiing. I don't encourage auto pilot while driving.

Yes I have. I went through both of my parent's funerals just that way. I was totally high both times, too. That's the reason for my auto-pilot mode. I don't use anymore, but I don't know how I could have ever made it through the death of my beloved parents without being on something. It was so sad to lose my two best friends in the whole wide world. I was using daily and quite a lot, so I guess I was doing everything on auto-pilot. I sure am glad to be free from all of that now.

Yeah, weird feeling of displacement there. Kinda fascinating.

Scarier, though, is "coming to" after 10 minutes of driving and realizing you have absolutely no memory of how you got to where you are now. Whoa!

Yep. It's like the brain shuts down & the body just goes thru the motions.
