I am currently 36 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I went to the midwives yesterday and she said that I was only measuring at 34 weeks and that I may have to go for a scan with a consultant if there is no change by my next appointment on Tuesday coming.
I have been really upset about this and was wondering if this had happened to anyone else before.
Thanks

Has the same midwife been measuring you? Often different midwives measure differently and therefore could be slightly out. Also the way baby is laying can affect the measurement on a particular day. Go to your appointment on Tuesday and if you need a scan look at it positively in that you will see your baby again before it is born! Often babies are normal size by scan when they are measuring small. If you are measuring small the obstetrician may suggest regular scanning of baby until he/she is born. You only have three and a half weeks left so it may be that the baby has moved down into the pelvis. Do you feel that the baby is small? Often a mum is right if she doesn't think the baby is small! Good luck and dont worry - just routine.

I was always small after week 17...remember and this is what my doctor told me measuring the uterus is not an exact science...They are using tape measures that have been stretched over time and sometimes you are futher up in the ribs or lower down in the pelvis area and they cant tell simply with the tape measure. My docs didn't worry about me being a week behind or even two they got a little worried at three weeks behind and I wento have a sonogram and they found out I was really consistently a week or so behind...which isn't bad. Don't worry about it. Drink a lot of water though!!! It will increase the amount in the uterus and that may be what they are worried about.

My advice? Ignore her! You go with your gut. I had this same argument with my maternity team, with my second and third babies, but I was right and they were wrong. Both were healthy six and a half pounds, which I admit isn't huge but average. At the end of the day though every baby is different, some are big, some are small. You can't compare them to a text book and when all is said and done that little one you have in there will come out when it's god damn good and ready and not before! And certainly not when some book tells it to! And you tell your midwife that when you see her! Good luck honey.

they said this to me and i gave birth when i was 40 weeks for some reason they don't take into a account the body shape of every woman. they also did this with my sister they said she was a month more than previously thought, she gave birth 10 weeks prem and the baby was not a month older than dates, i don't know why they change it so much with my last pregnancy i was given 3 different due dates! i mean obviously if you smoke or not eating well then this will be the cause but if you are healthy i would not worry about it, midwifes and docs have a reputation for changing dates xxx

This can be totally normal, it's quite common for a woman to be measuring 2 weeks behind or in front of what they should be.

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and my last midwife appointment I measured nearly 3 weeks ahead!! She sent me for a glucose tolerance test just to be on the safe side.

The good thing is that your midwife is aware of this and has steps in place for Tuesday.

I remember coming out of the maternity unit after a midwife told me the same on my second child, sobbing with grief, thinking there was something wrong with my baby. i wish medical staff would realise how seriously their words were taken.
My baby was small, just 6 pounds; but so were all my subsequent babies. The placenta did not do a very good job for my babies after 32 weeks, and they got smaller as I progressed to baby five, who was only 5 pounds. All were healthy though.
It's no harm for you to have a scan - it will reassure you and your midwife that things are ok; you are nearly there - you might be just a little small for dates....but small babies are SO much easier to deliver!

That's within the normal range of measurement. If the baby is in a different position than before, then that will affect the measurement. I really wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep yourself hydrated and eat well. You're almost ready to hold your little one!

I showed 10 weeks behind with both my daughters honestly, i was just very very small, thye worried constanly that thye where going be tiny, 1st daughter was 5 ibs 12 and my 2nd was 6 11, so really nothing to worry about, i didnt have a lot of fluid in either pregnancy and they where also quite short, 18 inches. Please dont worry

I was told that my baby was too small for my dates and my midwife sent me for a scan because she thought that my baby wasn't growing properly, anyway they kept saying that I wasn't big enough for my dates and when my baby arrived she was 8lb 14oz! All of the midwives kept saying 'where did you keep her?' as my bump seemed to be too small for the size of my baby.
