Definitely. I am a show breeder and am always experimenting with different diets to increase the size of my hamsters. The best blend of food will give you a big hamster.

I currently feed a lab block called RMH 3000 (Rat Mouse Hamster 3000) made by Purina Mills. It is a true lab block sold to labratories. It only comes in 50 lb bags for about $22 and I have to have a local feed mill order it in for me. The lab blocks have 100% nutrition. I also suppliment with my own blend of seed and diet blends that the feed store sells. I blend Squirrel Chow (lots of different seeds and nuts by Purina- different than Purina Mills), small animal food (it has uncooked oatmeal and alfalfa pellets, hulled peanuts, black oil sunflower seed and sometimes a parrot or cockatiel mix.

The balanced diet of the lab blocks with the added proteins and fats from the seed/nut blend are giving me some of the largest pups I've ever had.

Back when I first switched to the RMH 3000 from the other lab block that most feed stores sell, I ran a small experiment. I had two litters born a day apart. The parents of both litters were all close to the same size comparitively so the pups could be expected to be similar sizes. One of the litters I fed the "normal" block and the other litter I fed the RMH 3000. The difference was remarkable. Every pup being feed the RMH 3000 was larger than the pups in the other litter. That's all I needed to see. I didn't even finish using the "normal" block I still had, I put it outside for the squirrels.

So there's the long explaination that diet does effect growth.

I'm not sure what you mean by food group

Your hamster should always be fed a proper hamster food sold at a pet store, with the occasional greens given to it. Changing a brand of food wont hurt it
