The universe is expanding. Edmund Hubble observed that almost all stars and galaxies are red-shifted. This is a function of the doppler effect. As a light source recedes, its wavelength increases and frquency decreases. Its color appears to turn redder than if it were motionless.

The expansion of he universe has nothing whatsoever to do with our defintions of length and time! Why would you ask that?
It IS expanding, but why is it that I still can't get a parking space?

If you feel the universe is expanding then it is in your world! You have just opened yourself up with that comes a whole lot more, keep it up and you will see and know a whole lot more!

Expansion of Celestial orbits is due to changes in gravitational masses.
The reason for example that the Earth 's spin and also orbit around the Sun is slowing down ,because the Earth increase mass as it moves around the Milky Way.
The law of Gravity indicates it cannot stay in the same orbit if mass increases. So to maintain rotational equilbrium it must increase its orbit. As it does so time slows down. That is why we need to adjust our calendar to define one day period.
The Same scenario applies to all celestial bodies of the Universe.

Yes the Universe is expanding!

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

we dont know for sure but studies on the change of wavelength of light suggest that the universe is expanding.

The universe will one day come full circle and there will be a big bang. One for the egg heads to think about(remember where you heard it, when you are giving the gongs out),I also do personal problems, as well as pond maintance questions.

when we look at distant galaxies we can see that they are indeed moving away from us. we can tell this by how their light is red shifted. we could see it back in the oldest spectrograph's and the newest ones.

our definitions of length and time mean nothing to them.
