Sesshomaru is the youkai son of the powerful Inu no Taishou. Since Inu no Taishou is considered to be a daiyōkai (great yōkai), Sesshomaru is a daiyoukai himself. He is stoic and hard to read. He rarely smiles, and when he does, it's usually not a good thing; as once Jaken begged Sesshomaru to beat him rather than to smile because it was Sesshomaru’s smile that he feared most. Sesshomaru believes that struggle is the only way for survival and mostly throughout the series shows his contempt for InuYasha, his half brother.
Sesshomaru's mother has been introduced in chapter #466 of the manga. She knows how to increase the power of the Tenseiga. She wears around her neck the Meidou-Seki that was given to her by Inu no Taishou. She uses it to summon a Hellhound that grabs Rin and Kohaku and jumps in the Meidou crescent that Sesshomaru created with Tenseiga. He follows after and kills it, freeing Rin and Kohaku. The three of them continue into Hell, however, soon Kohaku and Sesshomaru realize Rin is dead and can't be revived. Her body is stolen by the Master of Hell, whom Sesshomaru later defeats along with purifying the dead in Hell. Back in his mother's palace, Sesshomaru is lectured by his mother for the need to have a compassionate heart. She revives Rin with the Meidou-Seki but warns Rin can never be revived again with the Tenseiga since it can only revive a person once. She warns Kohaku he too can't be revived by the Tenseiga.
With the ambition to walk the path of conquest, he desires to become stronger, even at the expense of others. He will not, however, use the shards of the Jewel of the Four Souls to gain strength, which separates him from other youkai questing for power. Though some think it's for his lust for pure power, others think it is created to accompany his original grace. The Shikon Jewel increases the user's power while swords like the Tessaiga (Steel-Cleaving Fang), the Tenseiga, and the Tokijin attack the opponent using the youki (yōkai ki) of the person wielding them. Sesshomaru wants to become strong by using his own strength and would never borrow power from another source. Although there is one case where he uses a shikon shard given to him by Naraku to help in the use of a human arm; which he uses in a battle against Inuyasha. It should be noted that he only uses the shikon shard to wield Tessaiga, not for strength. He discards it shortly afterwards, along with the arm.
Sesshomaru originally coveted InuYasha's sword, the powerful Tessaiga. Tessaiga is a powerful sword made from one of his father's fangs. A barrier was cast around the sword so that most youkai cannot hold or wield it as it burns their flesh.

Even knowing that he cannot touch the sword, Sesshomaru still desired to take it from Inuyasha. While his initial motivation appears to be pride and greed, Sesshomaru later claims the sword should rightfully be held by one able to fully wield its power. For this reason, he fought with InuYasha in their father Inu no Taishou's grave and by chance, InuYasha transformed the blade for the first time and hacked off Sesshomaru's left arm (In the American release of the manga, images were flipped so that the manga could be read from left to right, resulting in Sesshomaru's right arm being severed from his shoulder). After that, Sesshomaru began using the arms of other youkai, but they rotted and became useless after a while since their youki ran out. Later he made a deal with Naraku, that he would kill InuYasha in exchange for a human arm with a shard of the Jewel of the Four Souls, that way he could wield Tessaiga. However, he later lost this arm and the ability to wield the Tessaiga with it. Now though, he has stopped trying to steal the sword as he now knows it is the only thing keeping InuYasha under control. After episode 35, he stopped searching for yokai arms and decided to live with only one arm.

At this point it should be noted that nothing in the manga has yet suggested that Sesshomaru is capable of wielding the Tessaiga on his own. In the anime and the third movie Sesshomaru has been shown using the Tessaiga, but he never does so in the manga. He is never so much as able to grab the Tessaiga without the use of additional help (examples are the use of the Shikon shard to allow him the usage of a human arm to wield the sword), although in the third movie Sesshomaru can minimally tolerate the barrier around Tessaiga.

Sesshomaru was able to wield Tessaiga in episode 134 of the anime, but only for a short while. By taking the Tessaiga from InuYasha's hand, he "rescused" a human named Sara-hime (who had actually fallen in love with Sesshomaru) from being consumed by the yokai she had in her body, but only to die moments later. She died happily, knowing that she had been able to see her love, Sesshomaru, one last time before her death. Sesshomaru then walked off from her dissolving body after returning the Tessaiga to his brother.

Sesshomaru inherited the Tenseiga, the companion blade of the Tessaiga, another sword made from his father's fang. However, the Tenseiga, which can bring 100 people back to life with a single swing, was originally incapable of harming an opponent, so it was useless in a battle. This is why he desired the Tessaiga instead. He eventually used the power of Tenseiga to resurrect the head of Goshinki so that Kaijinbo could forge the Tōkijin from his fangs. Although the Tōkijin was a formidable weapon, it was later broken in a fight with Mōryōmaru. However, the swordsmith Tōtōsai reforged Tenseiga to be usable as a weapon, enabling Sesshomaru to perform the Meidou Zangetsuha technique, which opens a path to Hell. It was recently revealed that Tenseiga was originally a part of Tessaiga, meant to contain the Meidou Zangetsuha, which Tessaiga had obtained by defeating another youkai named Shishinki. In Chapter 493, Sesshomaru is able to unleash complete Meidou Zengetsuha, but only because it was near Tessaiga. This is important in many ways: It that Tenseiga is a cast off of Tessaiga, and finally: foreshadows that Sesshomaru and InuYasha may have to work together to destroy Naraku.
He is followed by his retainer, a frog-like yokai with a small beak named Jaken, and later by a human orphan named Rin, whom Sesshomaru brought back to life using Tenseiga. Though he told Jaken that he was merely testing his sword, his real motive for reviving her is unknown. He is also followed by a two-headed dragon named Ah-Un. Ah-un is Rin and Jaken's main form of transportation when Sesshomaru takes flight or when they need to cover long distances quickly, as only Sesshomaru and Ah-Un are capable of flight. Most recently, Sesshomaru saved Kohaku's life from Byakuya. Kohaku decided to join his retinue as he's leaving Sesshomaru's mother's palace. It is also revealed that none of his companions (excluding Ah-Un) can be revived by the Tenseiga since they all died before and they were either already revived by Tenseiga or is being kept alive by a Shikon jewel shard.
Throughout the series, we also get to see glimpses of his intellectual ability. When he first fought Mōryōmaru we saw how good a tactician he really is when he attacked him using his Kanetsu ability (despite the fact that Shippo later says that it wasn't him thinking at all - it was pure ego). Mōryōmaru only kept absorbing his attacks and thought Sesshomaru was a fool for empowering him. As it turns out Mōryōmaru's arm then blew into pieces since it couldn't handle the burden of Sesshomaru's attacks, and thus he permanently lost his ability to absorb attacks of youki and using them in counterattacks. Other times we also get to see how knowledgeable he is of the youkai world; when Rin inquired about a skeleton she saw, Sesshomaru told her that it belonged to yokai with a nearly impenetrable armor called the Meioju. Another time when Rin was about to drink the water from a youkai lake Sesshomaru told her to stop since the lake was a youkai called the Numawatari and it devoured all who came close to it.
Although Sesshomaru maintains a cool, disinterested exterior, throughout the story his compassion seems to be growing. When InuYasha was controlled by his youkai blood, Sesshomaru came to see for himself the power that InuYasha could produce, and managed to defeat him. He then instructed Kagome to return the Tessaiga to InuYasha in order to restore him to his former self. It is possible that he lost interest in obtaining the Tessaiga mainly due to InuYasha's need for the sword to control his youkai blood. He then left claiming that he intends to kill InuYasha one day, when InuYasha could adequately fight back. By making this public declaration, Sesshomaru is claiming first right to InuYasha's death by Sesshomaru's own hand, and at his choice of time and place. Thus Sesshomaru can then choose to battle any shared adversary with no loss of face and without admitting any familial attachment or emotions. This is a curious but historically documented manner of saving face and denying emotional attachment.[citation needed]

Sesshomaru tolerates Rin and protects her when she gets in trouble. Naraku once had Kagura kidnap Rin as a get-away plan in his attempt to absorb Sesshomaru. Naraku's plan failed and he tried to escape - Sesshomaru was incensed and began to pursue Naraku. But upon hearing that Rin was in danger, Sesshomaru let him go and came to the aid of Rin in a hurry.

Even though he is prone to hitting, kicking, and stepping on his servant Jaken, he has repeatedly warned Jaken to move out of the way prior to an attack. Further, when Naraku first emerged in his youkai form, Sesshomaru told Jaken to stay behind him as he attacked the youkai.

On his way to Hakureizan, Sesshomaru saves Kagome, Miroku, and Sango from the poison master Mukotsu, one of the Shichinintai, but only claimed that he killed Mukotsu because he was in his way. He also revived a young otter youkai's father (killed by Hakudoushi) in one episode.

When Kagura was injured, Sesshomaru pulled her from the river she was drowning in, after Rin fell in trying to save her. Also, when Kagura was dying, Sesshomaru purposely sought her out of his own accord and even thought of using the Tenseiga, only to conclude Tenseiga could not save her, as Kagura's mortally injured body soon dissolved into the wind.

In the manga (beyond the anime's current point), InuYasha and his companions were involved in a fight with the "water god" Numawatari. After none of their attacks were able to harm him, Sesshomaru arrived and insulted InuYasha's inability to kill a "low life youkai". He then easily dispatched the "water god" using his Meidou Zangetsuha ability. Sesshomaru then leaves after learning about the Tessaiga's new abilities with a strange smile on his face.

In the manga Byakuya, Naraku's newest offspring, seeks out Kohaku, who has one of the last three shards of the Jewel of the Four Souls. Byakuya uses his youkai powers to launch shouki snakes at Kohaku, causing him to fall unconscious. He is about to take him back to Naraku, when Sesshomaru appears and launches a ranged Meidou-Zangetsuha (still in the crescent moon shape), barely missing him. Byakuya flees claiming that he doesn't want to die, and comments on how it is so unlike Sesshomaru to save someone. Rin goes to help Kohaku, and Sesshomaru tells her not to touch him, because he is covered with poisonous snakes. Thereafter, Kohaku has been shown following Sesshomaru along with Rin, and Sesshomaru seems to have also taken Kohaku into his protection, albeit in his typical grudging fashion (after once more rescuing Kohaku from peril, Sesshomaru tells him curtly, "Don't make me waste time unnecessarily. This arm is only for holding a sword." However, he also advises Kohaku to take the path back to safety while he himself intends to proceed into greater danger). It is speculated that Sesshomaru may take an active role in protecting the singular remaining shard Kohaku now holds.

In Chapter 469, Rin appears to be dead due to her time in Hell (additionally, Sesshomaru notes her scent now matches those of the dead around him). Sesshomaru had entered Hell for the purpose of rescuing her, and upon learning he could not save her life, he was crushed. When he realizes that it was his urge to strengthen Tenseiga which brought them to Hell and ultimately killed her, he casts the sword aside and says that he would trade anything in exchange for Rin's life. This is a defining moment for the character, as he had previously made it apparent he valued only his own life (though outwardly). Never before had he directly stated he valued Rin's life. This is also the first, and only, time that he has outwardly expressed compassion throughout the entire series.
Rumiko Takahashi explained her choice of the Warring States period as a story setting because she wanted to write a ghost-and-demon story, and it "is relatively easier to draw out a ghost story from that time period ... in the Sengoku Jidai, there was war, and lots of people died." Her background as assistant to horror-manga artist Kazuo Umezu is clearly seen in her accurate but grisly manga battlefield scenes, and she pulls no punches in her depiction (in the manga) of the horrors perpetrated upon humans by yōkai and outlaws.

Many youkai are said to be particularly malevolent, and would prey on young, weak or elderly villagers as food; furthermore, yōkai were said to hang about battlefields to feed on the dead and wounded. Historically these Japanese legends were told to children as warnings to obey their parents, stay together, and not stray, much like the European "Little Red Riding Hood" story. In canon, we have seen Carrion Crows, Abi-hime (blood sucking birds), Vampire Bats, Birds of Paradise, The Thunder Brothers, and even Koga's yōkai-wolf tribe devouring villagers, and threatening to eat Kagome.

The subject of "youkai food" is depicted almost explicitly and graphically in the manga - it is touched upon and alluded to in the anime, but out of sensitivity to the viewers/readers, it is treated with more circumspection.

With this in mind, we find Sesshomaru recovering in a forest, after he is almost killed by InuYasha's successful use of the Kaze no Kizu attack. Rin, having been beaten by villagers and hiding in the forest, finds Sesshomaru bleeding. Seeing him suffering, she offers him fish to which he replies, "I don't eat human food." In this context, we can clearly see Sesshomaru's difference in attitude towards humans as opposed to that shown by his fellow yōkai. Later in the manga, Sesshomaru's mother puts in an appearance, and upon seeing Rin and Kohaku, she asks Sesshomaru if he intends to eat them.

On that note yōkai were thought to have eaten abnormal things besides just human, for example in the Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away they show how spirits and demons crave roasted newt. It has also been said they eat souls, like an incubus and succubus do. However there are few yōkai who actually have the characteristic of those kinds of youkai in Japanese folklore.
It is worthwhile to speculate that Sesshomaru will play a vital role in the destruction of Naraku, yet to be revealed in the manga. He seemed to swear an oath of vengeance against Naraku since the time Naraku used Rin as bait in his attempt to absorb Sesshomaru's body and yōkai power. However, after he broke Tōkijin, Sesshomaru seems to have taken an extended leave of absence from the hunt for Naraku. Instead, he has been searching for ways to increase the power of the Meidou Zangetsuha attack.
The main reason why Sesshomaru has so many powers that InuYasha doesn't is because Sesshomaru inherited all of his father's (and possibly mother's) power since he's a youkai. The relative ages of the two brothers may also be a factor: Sesshomaru was already an adult youkai plus InuYasha was sealed for an additional 50 years; thus Sesshomaru has had perhaps a few centuries more than his younger brother to discover and develop his powers.
Poison Claws: Sesshomaru's claws release deadly acidic poison which can melt flesh. Sometimes he uses it like InuYasha uses his Exorcising Claws of Steel attack, but he can also use it in the form of a green attack that looks like he’s spraying acid.
Whip of Light: Sesshomaru can generate a thin, whip like strand of yellow energy from his fingertips that can slice through almost anything. This attack was only in the anime and not in the manga, possibly as an alternate way of getting his hands on Tessaiga in one part of the anime. The whip also displays characteristics of poison akin to the burning effect it has on contact, possibly an extension of his claw attack.
Mokomoko-sama: The fur on Sesshomaru's shoulder can extend it to great lengths, and use it to whip or constrict people. It was once used to knock the Tessaiga out of InuYasha's hands. In episode 35, both ends of the fluff are seen, though this may be a may be an animation mistake. Sesshomaru's father had two mokomoko, that extended from the shoulders like Sesshomaru's, however, the human form of Inu no Taishou was only in the movie and was never revealed in the manga. Also, it bears a striking resemblance to the fur that separates Tessaiga’s blade from the hilt; this isn’t surprising as both have a common origin. Sesshomaru's mother also had a mokomoko boa, that was split into two.
Kenatsu: Translated as Sword Pressure, it is Tokijin's ability to cut and harm enemies without physical contact. In the beginning, it takes the form of a rain of needle-like energy which deals moderate damage to foes. Later, as Sesshomaru fully masters the sword it is released as a blue wave of energy that completely disintegrates the adversary. The strength of this attack depends on how it is unleashed by Sesshomaru. Usually it shoots beams of blue light, and when Sesshomaru utilizes its full potential it comes out in the form of parallel blue trails of energy similar to how InuYasha’s Kaze no Kizu is released. Shortly before the Tokijin broke he managed to shatter the Kongousouha spears that Mōryōmaru launched at him. Also he managed to break off part of Mōryōmaru's armored shell using Kenatsu. This is especially noteworthy since he was angry at the time, and is the only character in the series to break the shell using sheer force. InuYasha managed to break it with the Dragon-Scaled Tessaiga, but that is different since it absorbs yoki. In Sesshomaru's first battle with Mōryōmaru, it is implied that Tokijin's kenatsu ability is not just based off of Tokijin's base power. It is implied that Sesshomaru can mix in some of his youki in the kenatsu blasts.
Souryuuha: This attack is unique to the third and fourth InuYasha movies, appearing neither in the manga nor the anime series. It is a very powerful move surpassing the level of InuYasha's Bakuryūha. When Souryuuha is unleashed in the third movie, thick arcs of blue lightning stab the earth and carry their destructive force to Sesshomaru's opponent. In the fourth movie it is interesting to note that the energy released by Souryuuha resolves into the shape of a dragon right before destroying the enemy (in keeping with the attack's name). Dragon Strike is unique among the various sword techniques of the series in that, unlike moves like the Kaze no Kizu, Kongousouha, and Meido Zangetsuha; Sesshomaru is capable of performing Souryuuha with both Tokijin and Tenseiga - rather than being an ability of either sword, it seems that it is instead a manifestation of Sesshomaru's own youki, requiring a sword only as a conduit. Tōkijin initially proves to be less than ideal in that respect, unable to bear up to repeated uses of the ability as it is "only an oni's fang"; however the sword eventually strengthens such that it can perform the attack with no ensuing refractory period. Another unique fact about this attack is that Sesshomaru can use without actually having to swing the sword, but by simply holding it horizontally and commanding the strike. Though it is unproven, Souryuuha is possibly a modified version of his kenatsu. As InuYasha's Bakuryuuha is a modified version of his Kaze no Kizu.
Meidou Zangetsuha: With the reforged Tenseiga, Sesshomaru slashes at an enemy and creates an opening to the world of the dead. While at the beginning the wave takes the shape of a crescent resembling a crescent moon, Tōtōsai claimed that eventually through training, Sesshomaru would be able to make the opening a complete circle resembling the full moon. Sesshomaru's Meidou Zangetsuha was mastered with the presence of InuYasha's Tessaiga.
Flight: In the anime he has the ability to float in the sky or ride upon a sparkling dust cloud. Should he choose to do so for an extended period, the pant-legs of his hakama become ephimeral flowing masses-- similar to how one would visualize the wind-driven cloak of a ghost. In the manga, Sesshomaru's legs and the bottoms of his hakama become furry tails that propel him through the air. He also chooses to ride Ah-Un in flight, occasionally in the series.
Super speed: The ability to move faster than the eye can see, both on land and through the air. When he does this he leaves behind shadow-like images.
Teleportation: ability to morph into a ball of energy and move himself (and small amounts of other material, including other living beings) over great distances in a short amount of time. This is an ability given only in the anime.
Daiyoukai: As the son of a daiyoukai, Sesshomaru has inherited similar levels of power and thus is a daiyoukai in his own right; endowed with heightened senses, intelligence, strength, and a myriad of youkai powers. While he usually appears to be a very handsome human bearing splendid clothing and armour, he can transform into his true form at will. As he transforms he is either surrounded in a bright red aura or has a tornado circling around him. His eyes then take on a bright red color and youkai marks on his body widen and become more apparent. It is similar to InuYasha during his youkai transformations, however, Sesshomaru’s transforms much further due to his youkai blood and becomes a gigantic, crimson eyed, acid-breathing (only in the anime) canine with fluffy white fur. In this form his nature changes to adopt an animal-like instinct. In the anime his “Dokkassou” attack is released in his saliva and spread like an acidic aroma that melts anything nearby, and he loses the massive speed he had in his human form; in the manga he uses his claws.
Longevity: Being a youkai, Sesshomaru does not suffer from old age the way humans do. He appears to be a young man in his 20s; however he has been around for at least a few hundred years1. According to the official InuYasha character guide (Zusetsutaizen Ougikaiden), Sesshomaru has the appearance of a nineteen-year-old. An official age has never been given by Rumiko Takahashi, but he is estimated to about 700 years according later manga. Or even older, at the time of InuYasa's birth to present day (feudal era), his appearance changed very little in (estimated) 200 years.
Immunity: Various episodes of the anime like episode 162 And (perhaps the most indicative being episode #104) inform that Sesshomaru is immune to diseases, poisons, and gases that can paralyze or kill both humans and weaker yōkai. His greatest resistance seems to be towards holy and divine powers; his resistance to purification powers was so strong that he was able to enter Mt. Hakurei, despite its purification barrier (which was the most powerful barrier in the entire series as its reach extended throughout the surrounding area of entire mountain), without being purified and was only slightly weakened to the degree he was unable to perform his signature kenatsu attack in his battles against Jakotsu and Suikotsu. Also in episode #19 when Kagome shot Sesshomaru using one of her Hama no Ya, Sesshomaru caught it using his right hand’s forefingers. Most youkai would have been purified, but Sesshomaru remained unharmed with not even a scar on either of his fingers. It seems that the only mystical powers that Sesshomaru isn’t resistant to is youki such as those of InuYasha’s Kaze no Kizu. Another example of his strong body seems to come from Naraku’s inability to absorb him. As Sesshomaru blasted pieces of Naraku’s flesh, those same pieces wrapped themselves around him. Then Naraku reconnected himself with the pieces of his flesh that covered Sesshomaru and attempted to absorb him to no avail; as when Sesshomaru broke out unmarked from the absorbing process. Most of this happens because Sesshomaru's aura emanates around his body, due to his demonic purity. InuYasha possesses a far weaker version of such an aura, therefore it cannot repel energy or poisons like Sesshomaru's can, although it does help with his healing abilities.
Tenseiga: Tenseiga is a sword that can revive the dead. It does this by letting Sesshomaru see the pall-bearer imps that take away the souls of the dead so that he may destroy them with Tenseiga. In extreme cases, the Tenseiga also protects Sesshomaru from potentially lethal attacks. When in use, the Tenseiga has a blue aura. Lately in the manga, the Tenseiga is reforged by Tōtōsai to become a weapon allowing Sesshomaru to execute the Meidou Zangetsuha. This sword also has the name of 'The Heavenly Fang'. It was recently revealed that the Tenseiga is merely a cast off weapon of the Tessaiga, though exactly why, when, and how is currently unknown.
Tōkijin: Tōkijin is a sword crafted by the evil sword smith Kaijinbou from the fangs of Goshinki as part of Sesshomaru's continued efforts to obtain Tessaiga or a sword to rival it. It can fire off extremely powerful blasts of pure evil energy, but because it is filled with Goshinki's malice, only Sesshomaru can wield it without being controlled by it. Tōkijin can be used to blow back and injure an enemy with a powerful pinkish-purple aura, generated as the manifestation of pure hatred. It can also be used to slash at an opponent either directly or with kenatsu, and, like Tenseiga, can perform Sōryūha - however, being "only an oni's fang," Tōkijin initially could not bear up to repeated uses of Sōryūha the way that Tenseiga could. During a recent arc of the manga, Sesshomaru broke Tōkijin while battling Mōryōmaru, and afterwards abandoned the broken pieces with no further interest in keeping the sword, instead searching for a replacement which he found in the Meidou Zangetsu-Ha ability of the Tenseiga.
Staff of Heads: also called Staff of Skulls, nintōjo and also known as Two-Headed Staff: Locates his father's grave or perhaps Tessaiga itself, can fire streams of flame. The staff is usually held by his assistant Jaken. Also, it's seen that the Staff of Two Heads can be used to summon youkai.
The kanji of 'Sesshō' means 'killing or destruction of life.' 'Maru' is usually a suffix that is often added at the end of a Japanese name for young males in samurai families. They would use this name until they were recognized as adults, whereupon they would adopt a new name. Therefore Sesshomaru means "Destruction Man." However, it is said that 'maru' can also translate as the word for 'circle,' which is a common Japanese motif for what in the West is called 'the circle of life.'[citation needed] Thus it is widely assumed that the name Sesshōmaru translates literally as 'destruction of the circle of life', or 'end of the circle of life.' However 'maru' also means 'perfect,' so another possible translation is 'perfect destruction,' or 'Killing Perfection.' Also Early Japanese Emperors who were too young or were in any other way unfit to rule were called Sesshō (摂政), they usually had a regent from a noble clan (mostly the Fujiwara). His name could also mean the perfect killer or the perfect assassin as the title of the episode where he appeared in the anime is "Aristocratic Assassin, Sesshoumaru"
Sesshomaru has gold-colored eyes and long silvery knee length hair. There is fur covering his right shoulder. Rumiko Takahashi mentioned in an interview that when she was creating the character, it was originally intended to be armor but she exaggerated it while doodling and decided it looked good. In his youkai form, he has longer fur over the same shoulder and around his waist which is extremely similar to his 'armor'. Sesshomaru has a Prussian blue crescent on his forehead similar to the mark his mother has. He also has two magenta stripes on each cheek along with stripes on his eyelids and the sides of his wrists.

Sesshomaru's original form is a giant white dog with markings similar to those he has in his human form. Several times during the manga and anime when he becomes furious, badly injured or unable to defeat an opponent, his features can be observed shifting slightly, resembling his alternate form. His eyes turn red and the features and markings on his face begin to elongate. He only fully transforms to his alternate form twice, during his first battle with Inuyasha, and briefly when he encounters his mother in chapter 466.

Sesshomaru's armor includes a spiked pauldron that covers his left shoulder attached to the upper section of his cuirass. Both his armor and his long flowing sash have a decided "Mainland" (Asian) influence, as opposed to the customary Japanese armor and Obi (sash or belt). His Kimono is mostly white with a red (sometimes purple in the manga) honeycomb and flower crest at the collar, sleeves, and shoulder, most likely the crest of his family clan. He wears Sashinuki Hakama, (a type of traditional flowing Japanese "pants"), which are gathered at the ankles producing the "ballooning" effect. His footwear consists of flat pointed ankle-high boots (instead of sandals), also reminiscent of Mainland influence.
