And I'm talking "weird rustlings in the dark kind of scared" like Stephen KIng and not "oh, no, global warming, the icecaps are melting" kind of scared. Ghosts, the undead, vampires, werewolves, serial killers, rabid dogs, graveyards, curses, spells or whatever is just fine but just make sure it's scary!!!! If you can recommend more than one book, go right ahead! Thanks!

A really nice guy wants scary stories?

Try Dean Koontz's earlier works. His masterpiece "The House of Thunder" remains one of my best reads of all time. When I read it I didn't know if he wrote supernatural or natural stories. The book is a mystery too, bizaar stuff goes on and you aren't sure if it is real or what. Since then I have read many of his works. It ends up he does both types of stories, supernatural and just simply strange.

Other works of his:
Mr. Murder
Strange Highways (short stories)
Phantoms

"Misery" freaked me out. I was on the lookout for Annie two weeks after I read it. The only book that ever scared me. And it did it very well.
John Saul has the ability to make people cringe in their seat and freak out at the thought that someone is watching them over their shoulder. Check out "Black Creek Crossing." Curses, revenge, undead, ghosts, bloodshed. I haven't been disappointed yet.
Clive Barker's "Books of Blood" are supposed to be cool, but I've only read "The Damnation Game" and "Imajica." "TDG" was pretty freaky at parts...actually extremely freaky...but not as good (in terms of freak-out scary) as Saul.
Brian Keene has some interesting books out there. I always recommend one, because it sounds terrible and is very good: "The Conqueror Worms." Wierd satanic cults, massive sea creatures, obviously killer worms, wierd old people. He also has some books about the undead and sewer-dwelling zombies, or something like that. Worth reading.
Bram Stoker's "Dracula" is probably the closest to scared I've ever been. Something about the way he climbs down walls upside down...
Jack Ketchum is supposed to be as good or better than King. Haven't read him yet, but I will soon and can't wait.
Check out short story anthologies, such as "The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror" or "The Mammoth Book of Best New Terror." The Terror one is probably the one you want, but I'm not sure how many they made (the Horror one has been coming out annually for quite a few years now).
Check out the Stoker awards for bunches of others:

Best wishes!

u mentioned stephen king, so u may have already read it, but "It" scared the hell outta me n still does. i also really liked "The Stand". "Tommyknockers" was very creepy and has some "It"references, which just adds to the creepiness. one of my favorite books is "The Talisman" by stephen king and peter straub...great story, has every emotion in there. i was scared and excited most of the time, laughed other times n even managed to get a good cry in during a few parts of it. its got ur werewolves, ur radioactive wastelands, ur magical potions ur alternate worlds and a whole lot more :)

The Amnityville Horror. It's "based on a true story" if you believe in haunted houses. I read the whole thing in one sitting, too scared to put it down.
