SPORT
NOUN: 1a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. b. A particular form of this activity. sportful, sportfully, sportfulness
DANCE
INTRANSITIVE VERB: 1. To move rhythmically usually to music, using prescribed or improvised steps and gestures. dancer, dancingly, danced, dancing, dances
In my opinion, as an ex dance teacher / choreographer dance is firstly "an art". It is,however, very physical and indeed challenges the body even more so than most athletic activities. It is certainly governed by certain rules and customs Unfortunately, it has also, in past years, become competitive, but I still would not call it a sport. Dance is the only art of which, We, the dancer, are the product.
So yes, although extremely physical - I would not consider it a sport, but an art form.

While dance has many of the same elements as a sport -- it is athletic, can be done competitively, is about working with others, requires extensive discipline, training, dedication, and practice, and can develop virtuousity, the essence of dance is very different. Sports have competition as their ultimate goal -- the desire and ambition to outdo the other athletes. Dance, on the other hand, has historically played a much different role in human existence. It the physical manifestation of ideas, emotions, spirituality, desires, needs, celebrations, rites of passage, and recognition of the continuity of life through past, present and future. It is communication through the body. It is made of us and we of it.
It is far more than sport.

dance is in every way a sport, if you do it right you get your heart pumping to a normal workout degree, and the keep it going for awhile. it needs endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility to really get the technique down, and it also could use a little acting as well. In my opinion, it will be in the Olympics in a few decades. If they have ice dancing, why can't they have jazz????

NO...It is an art!!!
Dance isn't about if you can do a triple turn, fouettes, or russians, but about what you look like doing it. People dont go to shows to see how athletic people are. I think the style that people put into technique is what makes them a dancer. If what they look like dancing is more importantn then it is obviously art. Also, notice this is in the arts and humanities section.

Absolutely!! if you dance you are doing basically the same thing as any other team, competing! I think that anyone who says otherwise has never danced competitavely, or at least never in more than one type of dance.
