The heating programmer seems to work ok but the house gets too warm and the thermostat doesn't seem to automatically switch off and back on again as the house cools we have to manually turn the dial. Engineers have checked the thermostat with the hairdryer test and it seems to work then. It seems like the thermostat is not talking to the boiler so we are either boiling hot or freezing cold. Help!

Control wiring.

If turning the stat high and low causes the heating to go on and off, then there is no wiring fault. It must be a faulty thermostat. Could also be a 3 wire stat with only 2 wires connected (No neutral) which will give very large swings between on and off, but should not be as bad as you describe. What kind of stat is it? Ignore the answers about water!! You are clearly talking about a room stat!

If the engineer says that the thermostat is OK then the thermostat fixed to the boiler may not be in correct position to sense the temperature of the boiler. Either some thermal insulating material may be in between the thermal sensor of thermostat and the boiler where water temperature can be sensed, or its tip that senses the temperature may not be in the correct position. It is also possible that electrical switching contacts of thermostat might have worn out and it is working sometimes and sometime it does not. Please check the sensor is in correct position and sensor is in contact with the boiler where water temperature can be sensed and still if it is not working then try replacing the thermostat itself.

Did the "engineers" check that the stat was acutally turning the boiler on and off or just that the contacts were opening and closing?

The stat could work fine but there could be a fault in the wiring.

Time for a new stat and if that doesn't sort things, new wiring back to the boiler as well.

Does sound like the stat is at fault, unless the boiler settings have been altered. Stats are not expensive, replace it to prove a point. if you get the same make you may not need to change the backplate and therefore not touch the wiring, normally just plug in.

If the thermostat is working properly yet the house gets too hot, then I suggest that you set thethermostat lower and try that.
