instead of divorcing? Is it because deep down they can't let go? Is it for religious reasons? It seems like it would complicate things. If you meet someone new, you are still legally married. If something ever happened to you, unless there is a will, the significant other has no rights because he or she isn't your spouse. If it's over and you are living like a single person anyway, why not just get divorced?

When my parents split up it was easier and less expensive to legally separate rather than divorce so that's what they did. They agreed that if either one of them wanted to remarry they would get a divorce. They made my sister and I the sole beneficiaries in the event of their death to make sure we were taken care of first.

If a couple have been legally separated for 2 years (very according to state and country) The divorce becomes a no fault divorce. Some people choose this because it in the end costs both parties less. Also if there is no animosity between partners it can be convenient. Though i agree that eventually there should be a divorce

Most of the time, it appears that they stay seperated because neither one wants to pay all that money for the divorce. They go on with their lives, but don't realize that LEGALLY, this would be a very sticky, uncomfortable situation, should they die, or inherit a bunch of money, etc.... The WISE ones will immediately divorce!!!

No, it's because it's really expensive. To get an agreeable divorce in Florida costs well over $300. And most peopel don't have the money to take their spouses to court.

Good question. I have a cousin & a friend, who have been separated from their husbands for years. They are under the impression that the husband will file for divorce, since he is the one who left the marital home to cause the separation. I tried to tell them that they married cowards & I wouldn't put the fate of my future in a man's hands, who couldn't even give me the courtesy of knowing that I wasn't worth his time!!

there are all kinds of reasons, financial, religious, children. if they do remain married the other person will get nothing unless they put that person in their will, or make arrangements for them to be taken care of. they may not have any intention of remarrying they may not want to split the as setts. usually it is all about money.
