Where in the novel is it that the mother shares her preference for the son over Francie??

it's when the boy is born.. she realizes that she loves him better and vows that Francie will never know....

I read this many many years ago. But remember clearly that the mother favours the son. I think Francie is given chores to do while the son doesn't have to do any. Probably other things too.

I'm not so sure she shows a preference for her son, but it may have to do with her decision to send him to school rather than Francie. She knows that Francie will find a way but she's also sure that her son will not continue his education on his own. (I'm so happy to see that someone is still reading that wonderful old book, a favorite of mine when I was a kid.)
