The ACLU is committed to preserving the rights secured for us by the Bill of RIghts, particularly the First Amendment. That means that they will sometimes seem to be promoting some pretty seedy people -- but it's the issue that is of concern to them, and what the implications are of allowing violations of civil rights to go unchallenged. If it's any comfort, convicted felons don't have much in the way of civil rights in most states. But until someone is convicted of a crime, they should not be treated as if they had. Simply saying that someone is a pedophile isn't enough. And if you see the ACLU in court with a pedophile, there is a constitutional issue that is at stake -- their concern is not with that individual.

Pedophile is a broad term which includes any conduct which might be deemed inappropriate with a minor. It can even include the conduct of one minor with another minor.

I believe what the ACLU is trying to do is establish a distinction between someone who is a child molester and a teenager who didn't want to stop when his girl friend said no, but didn't rape her . Also get a consensus between judges regarding inappropriate touching. Should accidental touching carry the same penalty as intended touching?
