If you can afford to retire, DO IT. You have worked for it now enjoy it. Take some time to enjoy your family and friends. I have heard of so many people who put off retirement until they were too old or too sick to enjoy it. You are still young---LIVE IT UP.

If you are getting full benefits at age 66, by all means stop if you are tired of working.

For some people, all they have is their job and retirement hangs heavy on them. There are many people that just cant sit still.

Others havent put by enough to retire on or cant live on what retirement pays so they continue to work.

If you are still in good health, and dont need the company health insurance, I say retire at 66 if you have the money. That way you can take trips and enjoy yourself while you are still in good health.

Maybe you should test it out and take a couple of weeks vacation with no plans and just sit around the house. Fill your days up with what you think you would do if retired. That will give you an idea of what retirement will be like with the safety net of going back to work.

If you really don't want to work anymore, retire whenever you want-life is to short to be miserable. When you retire, there are going to be alot of major changes. The biggest thing I was shocked at was Medicare. There is no dental that goes with it. All these years we have done so much to save our teeth and when the Feds come in and handle it-they just don't care. If you've got the money to retire, retire whenever, but maybe I'd check into what the situation will be when you do retire.

If you dread your job, no matter how old you are, you should find something else to do. If you like your job, you might as well keep working. Another option would be to find a volunteer "job", if you are certain that you have plenty of $ for your remaining years. Definitely draw SS, though. Even if you don't need it, stick it in a mutual fund. You will get a better return on your $$ than SS will ever get for you.

I'm 50 and considering retiring in the next two years. It's time the government paid my way in stead of it being the other way round.

My philisophy is "Longivity is continue working!" I think you should stay on your job as long as you can. Think of retirement only when it is so stressful that your health can't take it. Just think about the enviorment that you have colleagues to talk to, paycheck to pay your holidays, medical benefits.... After retirement, everything is from your pocket.
