i am curious about such artists as Mozart as well as like Van Gogh.....did they think their music/art was wonderful? Or did they simply do their work without this thought in mind? Just curious if there is any documentation on this.

Bethy,
The best source to answer your question is Mozart's letters. You can find them in any library and there are many excerpts online. In general, I would say that Mozart was proud of his "craftsmanship" and productivity and often commented on his music from that perspective. He doesn't really have the attitude that his music is the best thing ever or that is was perfect or that he was a genius. He speaks more about the effect he hopes it will have on his audience (I did "x" hoping it will have "x" effect) and sometimes their reaction after a performance (there was great applause, there was a gasp here, etc.). He does talk a lot about innovative aspects of his music too (I've never heard someone do something like this, this is quite new, etc.).

You gotta think about the things that you are good at. You just have that confidence that you are good at it. I'm sure it was the same way for them and honestly, Mozart as well as Van Gogh where very egotistical. I'm sure they felt they where Gods gift to humanity and their work was heaven sent.

He had more hits than Bach, but Beethoven was better in concert.
