Carson Palmer is a solid candidate for this award. but I think in 10 years we will be saying Mario Williams.

1995 Ki-Jana Carter, rb Penn State Cincinnati 8 0
1996 Keyshawn Johnson, wr Southern Cal. N.Y. Jets 11 4
1997 Orlando Pace, ot Ohio State St. Louis Rams 10 7
1998 Peyton Manning, qb Tennessee Indianapolis 9 7

I hate Peyton, but who else would you pick from that list? Vick?? Carr???? Winning a SB does a lot for your reputation
I would say Orlando Pace would be next...

A case can only be made for two players: Orlando Pace and Peyton Manning. Carson Palmer could prove to be a great one but he hasn't had enough playing time to be mentioned in the same breath as Pace and Peyton. Also note there have been two Manning's drafted first overall in the last 15 years; Peyton and Eli ('98 & '04).

Hey I dont really care for Manning either but as of this moment he is the best #1 overall pick. The only guy that can really compete is LTand he was picked like 3rd or 4th and VIck was first. A guy I look to past Manning very soon though is Carson Palmer.

I think it has to be Peyton Manning. Next in line would be Orlando Pace, which is kinda funny saying a lineman was the best pick. Peyton Manning not only has the records now, but also a Super Bowl ring. He has been solid throughout his career, much like Orlando Pace. The only difference is quarterback can be a lot more challenging than a lineman.

How could anyone not give an argument for Peyton Manning?...Carson Palmer wasn't too shabby either....really..none of the other ones impress me that much...Julius Peppers would have gone 1st overall if it weren't for the stupid Texans franchise stealing the 1st overall pick by joining the league...forcing the 1-15 Panthers to pick at #2 instead....aye aye aye...
But yeah...Carson Palmer or Peyton Manning...freak all you want but if they were on your team, you wouldn't complain would you?

Its gotta be Manning - not eli. There have been so many 1st pick busts or guys that didn't live up to the hype in the last 15 years. He is one of the few exceptions to the rule. Not the only one, but one of the few.

of the players who have been around long enough to prove themselves, it's Peyton by far. He's the next Marino/Favre. He is already in many people's top 10 (at the very least) QBs of all time. Most of those guys on the lists were busts as well, so there's not a hole lot of competition.

go ahead and freak because its manning...he's put up amazing numbers, he has the added responsibility of being the offensive coordinator(effectively), and he has a super bowl now...the only guy in striking distance of manning is orlando pace, he has been a great addition to the st. louis OL but is injury prone and has given the rams trouble in the past with his contract
