I've been looking at iMac's on eBay and I dont know anything about Mac computers. I do know a little about Dell and HP and IBM. I want to get a used laptop but I need to know what I should be wary of when it comes to problems. Any suggestions?

It's like buying a used car, you gotta ask the people selling it about problems and be careful.

Quality used Laptops will be REALLY hard to find. They wear out quickly and cosmetically they will wear, like the track device, case, etc.

If you go that route, be prepared to purchase TWO items:

1) New Operating System. I doubt you'll get a good OS on a used machine unless they also give you the recovery CDs for the machine. You WILL want to FORMAT the hard drive and install a fresh OS. Recovery disks will work, but rarely will they be saved in a used Laptop situation. New XP OS can be found at $50, new Vista Basic for $100 or so.

2) New Battery. You WILL need to spend $75 or so on a new battery. They only last 1-2 years. After that they need to be replaced.

So, you need to ADD $175-$200 to the price of any used laptop... consider that when buying one.

I am a computer expert. Thats why i work at geeksquad. listen, don't get a used laptop, you will suffer a lot. Second off, don't get an iBook, or a macbook. if you don't know how to use mac os software, don't use them. the best i can suggest you are gateway, dell, or hp laptops. it also depends what you are searching for. if you want multi media such as music, movies, etc go with hp. if you just want everyday computing go with dell. if you want a sleek look and a great laptop go with gateway. another thing, it also depends on your price. since windows vista came out, go with that. and if you want a laptop. go to the company's site and try to customize the laptop. that is always a good thing. that way you cant complain the laptop is sucky. hope my knowledge has helped, :)

Apple's notebooks hold up a lot better than PC notebooks. Apple computers maintain a high resale value. Ultimately, a Mac is always the best choice.
