No I did not know what I wanted. I only thought I knew. I was divorced and a single parent with a 3year old son to raise. I partied a lot, lived out on my own, paid my bills with my child support checks, and got my parents to do the rest. That might sound pretty cool to some of you, but now, at a much older age, I see how I should have been building a career, training my son how to prepare for his future better, and saving money so I could have a happier life in my older age. Now, my health is failing, I have no money and I can't afford to have any fun. I only own my home due to an inheritance, my car too. I can't keep up with even the low monthly payments on my car or house insurance or save any money up for preparing to stay warm in the winter. I can't work due to my health, which is bad because of the ways I abused myself in years past and if I weren't an optimist, I'd be just plain crazy. It all sounds pretty rotten, doesn't it? Well, it is! But Here's the good part. I'm happily married to a wonderful man for 18 years now, have a daughter age 15, my son is now 29 and we have each other. I am still learning every day ways to live life better so that each day counts. No more days of not remembering due to being totally wasted. I want to experience this life I now live. I am now a Christian and I know I have been forgiven for all my short-comings and blatant wrongs and I have a new life. As long as I have these things, I will not be without anything that matters to me. With God, life is the greatest!

When I was 21, I was a senior in college. I knew I wanted to graduate from college and, at some point, get married and have kids, but I didn't have much of an idea of what type of job I wanted. It wasn't until a few years later that I decided what I wanted to do and decided to get my Master's to help me reach that goal.

If you're having a hard time figuring out what to do with your life, I would suggest trying different things to see what you like best. If you haven't been to college, why not take a few classes? If you don't want more school and just want a good job, try something short-term, like an internship. If you try different things, hopefully you'll get an idea of what type of job or education you want, and that will be a good start.

When I turned 21, I was a college drop-out living from day to day, taking whatever crappy work I could get for little pay. This was after failing at trying to be what everyone else told me I should be. About 3 years later, I got my act together, went back to college (different major) got a degree, got a job and a profession. If I'd known to do that at 18, I wouldn't have wasted 6 years of my life.

When I was 21, I was still living at home with my parents, and it was the summer between my BA and my MBA programs. I definitely didn't know what I wanted out of life completely yet. I celebrated with a dinner at a nice restaurant with my parents (not your typical 21-year-old thing, I know) and some Dom Perrignon. My boyfriend at the time was a jerk about the whole thing, after we'd been together almost 4 years. I guess the best thing to come out of that birthday was a clue to the future (I ended up leaving him).

I had a 4 year old daughter and was working full-time on the 1,000-acre farm I had just bought (on a big loan (big chance, but I'm glad I took it)). All I knew was that I wanted to raise her the complete opposite of how I was raised. (My parents never said teenage sex was dangerous). Mainly I wanted to be happy. I am extremely smart (29 on the ACT), but I honestly wanted nothing to do with college or higher education, just hard work. Now at 32, I am a married to the man of my dreams and I think I've achieved almost all of my goals.
