strong, "cheap", quick to install, much more wear resistant then many other things. Doesn't have to be painted. That is for the outside. If you're talking about cinder block walks, they are solid, bear weight and the blocks themselves are "light" because they are hollow. These things are all compartively...

it's mud, adobe form and shaped into "bricks"... and consequentially it inherits the same amazing insulation properties that adobe structures have. It keeps the heat inside during the winter and the heat outside during the summer better than any wood or metal-framed construction could.

Cheap compared to stone. Regular shape and size. Easy to build with not-especially-skilled labour. Facing varieties be used without further finishing.

Most importantly I think, it is fire resistant... Not very pretty though
