In addition to the above answer you don't need to go to a retailer with a card. After the one month free period you can just simply pay for xbox live with your credit card done through your xbox. Alternatively after you have registered with them you can re-new on line. If you already got an xbox then just go to register new account/sign up in your xbox menu and follow instructions on screen.

When you buy an xbox 360 it comes with 1 month of free xbox live after the trial you can buy a card that extends your membership at your local retailer .................
