It's just an old wives tale! The truth is that the baby is taking up so much room that the pressure on you stomach is forcing undigested food upwards and because you produce a hormone that relaxes the muscles and ligaments during pregnancy, the muscle at the top of your stomach which normally keeps the food down , is weaker and is releasing food and acid into your oesophigus which gives you heartburn. Use lots of Gaviscon, you can get a prescription from your doctor which is free cos you are pregnant. It's disgusting stuff but at least it helps. Try to avoid greasy or acidic foods, pastry and tomatoes used to be agony when I was pregnant! Good luck.

There is really no truth about that saying. I had heartburn like you would no believe, and was told the same thing. So I was expecting her to come out with lots of hair. When she was born she had hair just not a lot and by the time she was 3 months all of it was gone...

I'm not sure if it is proven to be true but it was in my case. i had really bad heartburn all day everyday nearer the end of my pregnancy and my son was born with loads of hair(even the midwife commented on how much hair he had). the good news is that when you have your baby you'll get no more heartburn and have a baby at the end of it.

good luck

Its an old wives tale - there is no scientific fact for this.

Heartburn in pregnancy is caused by pregnancy hormones causing a softening of the muscles which keeps the top of the stomach closed, so acids can leak out into the oesophagus, and by also the pressure of the baby pushing your stomach upwards.

Yes I had heartburn and yes my baby had hair but the two were totally unconnected!!

I can't believe people still believe these old fables in 2007!!!

Many women experience heartburn for the first time during pregnancy. More than one-half of all pregnant women report symptoms of severe heartburn, particularly during their second and third trimesters.

Heartburn may occur during pregnancy because of changing hormone levels, which can affect the muscles of the digestive tract and affect how different foods are tolerated. Pregnancy hormones can cause the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus) to relax, allowing stomach acids to splash back up into the esophagus. In addition, the enlarged uterus can crowd the abdomen, pushing stomach acids upward.

Some Tips:
Eat several small meals each day instead of three large ones.
Eat slowly.
Avoid fried, spicy or rich foods, or any foods that seem to cause relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and increase the risk of heartburn.
Drink less while eating. Drinking large amounts while eating may increase the risk of acid reflux and heartburn.
Don't lie down directly after eating.
Keep the head of your bed higher than the foot of your bed. Or place pillows under your shoulders to help prevent stomach acids from rising into your chest.
Ask your doctor about using medications such as Tums or Maalox, which are generally safe to use during pregnancy. You may find that liquid heartburn relievers are more effective in treating heartburn as they coat the esophagus.
Wear lose-fitting clothing. Tight-fitting clothes can increase the pressure on your stomach and abdomen.

I have 3 girls...the first two I had no heartburn and they had zero hair!!! My third daughter I had heartburn(severe) almost the entire pregnancy and even though I fought with everybody that kept telling me the baby would have hair(absolutely nobody in either mine or my husbands family was born with hair) she was born with a head full of it!

Don't really believe it still but it was very true for me!

It is an old wives tale. But one of my friends said that he heard on the radio that they did a scientific study on this and found that it was true. People with mild to severe heartburn had babies with a full head of hair. Who knows how true it is, probably is not. I have bad heartburn too so I guess we will see. LOL

I had constant heartburn on my second! It's like your throat is on fire...was always drinking milk...which actually causes the heartburn to come back again because of the fat in it...that's why it works straight away but then comes back! Couldn't win! My second born did have quite a lot of hair but none right on top!
I've never heard that saying before.

Good luck on your upcoming event!

I may be wrong, but I had heartburn with 3 boys, and no heartburn at all with my daughter, could be a boy. All my babies had very little hair, all 4 of them.

I don't know if it's a myth or not. I had HORRENDOUS heartburn from the day of conception to the day my daughter was born and she came out looking like a 3 year old because of all the thick, long hair she had!!!
