I mean honestly names like Shaniqua and Loquanda just ensure that your kid will never get a job interview or a call back on a housing rental. Why do they do it then?

"Horrible" is a completely subjectve word. But I will be honest. I am black and sometimes, SOMETIMES, I feel the same way. Some of the names I like and some I think are crazy. It is a cultural thing however. Blacks clearly identify with certain names on a more personal level than whites and vice versa. It's clearly cultural. Just look at other countries. Each one is full of names "Americans" find completely strange.

P.S.- I also think it may have something to do with black parents trying to be unique and creative and individualizing their child so that they stand out. Though true, "Chaniqua" is not going to get a job as quickly or easily as "Susan" will. It can very much be a disadvantage.

My name is Samirah, do you think that's a horrible name. It's apart of my Nigerian heritage. Not all Black people have horrible names, just because their not named Becky and Peter doesn't mean their horrible. Although I feel as though a lot of American born Blacks that are descendants of slaves have lost their true culture, so some might be trying to retrace their roots by naming their kids these names. Others are just trying to be unique. The only reason why a Black person with these types of names wouldn't get a job is because of racism and the mentally that all Black people are lazy, uneducated etc..

Well, I actually like the names because they are rich and ethnic. Some are truly unique and precious names. Well, I guess parents keep such names because they are in some way close to the roots and culture. Just like we see certain names extremely common in the American culture like James and Tom and Steve and Lisa and Judy etc etc. Anyways, if there is going to be stereotyping and discrimination based on names, we can't really help that, unless parent is highly sensitive and aware that there is a possibility of that happening. I don't know...it would be very interesting to see a research on this topic (if it hasn't already been done) about how much a *name* affects chances.

Perhaps they see beyond the ideal "Jane" and "Jessica", which are no more horrible than Shaniqua or Loquanda. Why don't you have problems with other cultural names like Jose or Rinko? Do they make people any more or less intelligent?

Yes, jobs discriminate based on names, which is rather unfortunate and racist. This doesn't mean everyone has to conform and name their child Amanda. What a horrid world it would be were that to occur.

Because they don't care... I honestly have wondered this myself. I know a girl who's named after Mexican liquor.. To me, its funny...really pathetic, but hilarious. Oh, and by the way I'm black, and my daughter has a "normal" name. Not every black person names their child nonsensical jibberish. But sometimes these names that sound like they've been made up are actual African names, and trying to preserve ones heritage isn't "horrible".

Umm, I know a white girl named Shadanee. So there is nothing wrong with these "horrible" names. They are different and nice.

I can assure you that not all black people name there kids names like that! Plus what is distasteful to some isn't to others. You should also stop generalizing because you just make yourself look idiotic when you do!
