You can use it for lots of stuff. It's just like a USB port for a computer. You can plug a mouse and keyboard into it. It's also for the eyetoy and headset.

Da usb thing is fo you to charge ipods or do other stuff with it like memory stuff. Maybe wirless controlls and a expanxion pck.

I'm not sure what different things its for but mainly its used for multi-tap, which lets u hook up to extra controllers for a 4 player video game.
