Americans call them 'notebooks' or 'portables', I believe. We, the British, call them 'laptops' !
I am travelling from the Britain to the USA to buy a notebook (laptop). I need to know the names of some quality/reputable american magazines published in the USA which review and test notebooks so I can make an informed choice of which model/brand to buy...
(PLEASE DO NOT RECOMMEND ANY U.K./BRITISH MAGAZINES...ONLY AMERICAN ONES.....THANKS)

You will not like my answer. Find someone to help you determine precisely what your requirements are for a computer. This means what and when and how you will use it. This also will determine the type of drive -- go with a core duo drive for speed --and determine software you will need and then memory. Most notebooks are wireless now. Then just go to a website for reputable machines like Dell or Gateway. Their staff wil help assess and assist you. The reason computer magazines are not a good source for informed decision making is because computer and software manufacturers support them through advertising. Consumer Reports does not provide sufficient data on computers and it looks at technology from a different slant such as "best buy." It is your money and corporations themselves purchase their computers by determining their requirements first and then shopping for the best deal -- not necessarily the cheapest deal.

Hi, I just bought a laptop and looked at every review site out there and the sites are better than the magazines and free. The best one I used was cnet.com.

What I liked about it is it even showed VIDEO reviews where you see the laptop. I ended up buying an HP Pavillion which for the money you won't be able to find something better. Go to the site below and compare what you get from hp and I have yet to find another company that can beat them in price, speed, screen size etc.. I got an awesome 17 laptop windows vista 2 gigs ram dvd full size keyboard and you won't believe how inexpensive when you go there.

Lastly, I like that you can make the cost of your laptop higher or lower based on what you add. I was able to bring the cost of my laptop way down by taking things off of it like antivirus software (Which you can find free anyways) and word processor software (Again free)

Consumer Reports, PC World and PC Magazine all come to mind.

But you can check out this kind of info online for free.

Here's a link to the Top 5 All-Purpose Laptops from PCWorld.com:
