This question dawned on me watching American Idol last night. Please... I don't need the politically correct lectures about how "no race is better than another" and about how "a great singer" is someone's opinion. I know all that stuff. Just answer the question. Put it this way. Of all the black people and white people with great voices, which voices are truly better in your opinion- Blacks or whites?

Unbelievable. I specifically detail what I DON'T want and that's exactly what I get. People keep saying "There are great singers from both races!" DUH!!! I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. I asked you people to PICK ONE! If u honestly can't, then fine. That's okay. But enough with all the PC. Take me. I think Celine Dionne and Whitney Houston are two of the greatest of all time. But I personally think Whitney sounds better. That's all I wanted from you people. But I do conceed to the point that certain races sound better in certain genres. Something I failed to consider. Very true.

Well honestly I think it is culture. Blacks are raised in a culture of music and encouraged to sing. Most blacks were raised in the church and ***** spiritials have that soulful feel to them. I think it gets into your soul and tends to flow out. Blacks also are more in touch with their emotions and taught NOT to hold back (emotion shows in song). Whites tend to worry more about image, being socially correct and downplaying emotions. The white church sings music that is very bland and rehersed. No "soul". Most of your great whit singers learned, grew up, or borrowed from that soulful culture.
I also think blacks learned during slavery to use music as an outlet, and a secret way to communicate. Thus music really took on a special place in our culture that extends to today.

Well honestly, I think most people are copycats. When Whitney houston and Mariah Carey came along, They were both great singers, then suddenly every wannabe singer had to try and sound like them, with the quivering throat, ear splitting notes, etc. MOst could not pull it off and ended up sounding bad. Where as if they had just sang within their normal range, it would have sounded much better.
As a general rule, and I know people hate generalizations, but here goes: I think most black people sound alike. Then tend to do the R&B stuff and rap stuff. They all wanna do the throat quivering thing and stretch a word out forever. Most of the time it ruins a song.
A lot of white people want to imitate black singers, so they try and do the same thing.
Talent level is subjective, There a lots of good white singers and good black singers, it's the copycats and wannabes that ruin a particular singers style.

Every race has great singers. I think African American people just generally have more soul than white people, but every once in a while we get some really good white singers. Just look at Christina Aguilera. I may not be the biggest fan, but there is no denying that she has got a great voice and a very soulful one at that. American Idol definitely makes it seem like black people have better voices than white people though...thats for sure.

Oh yeah, what about JoJo? Shes a white girl with a great R&B voice....

I do agree with most every one else though, it really depends on the genre of music that is being sung.

No, that would be making a generalization. Who is a better singer? Aretha Franklin or Barbra Streisand? Years ago, I would have said Aretha. But Barbara has stood the test of time, and her voice is still as beautiful as ever. Aretha sounds nothing like she used to (smoking, poor diet), so I don't think anybody can say it comes down to a yes or no answer. Each side has great singers. Sometimes it all boils down to whatever the current popularity is (style of singing and musical trend).

I'd say 50-50, because I like both & can't say I like one more.
I do believe Celine Dion is one of my favorite female singers.
I think it's more the style than the voice I'm attracted to.
I appreciate black singers but prefer the style of the white singers better.

for sure, song isn't an argument here, race is. The singer being white is the only subject that makes her extra ideal on your eyes. If Celine Dion belted out "admire", it may be the excellent song ever to you, so packed with emotion and charm, via fact a white female is making a song it. it rather is particularly unhappy, which you're ridiculous, hypocritical racism even bleeds into the song you lsiten to.

I love both black and white singers. I can never say one race is better than the other. Besides, there is no such thing as race so your question should be which culture is better at singing, which again I would say neither of the cultures are better than the other.

Obviously, tune isn't an quandary right here, race is. The singer being white is the one factor that makes her higher on your eyes. If Celine Dion belted out "appreciate", it might be the high-quality tune ever to you, so filled with emotion and style, without problems on the grounds that a white girl is singing it. That is quite unhappy, that you're ridiculous, hypocritical racism even bleeds into the tune you lsiten to.

I think it depends on the genre. White people definitely have the edge on opera and classical, while black people have the edge on soul, R&B, and rap. There are some good black rock musicians, but many more good white ones. There are some good white jazz musicians, but many, many more black ones. Pop is split down the middle.

Why don't black people attempt country music? I know there's Cowboy Troy, but his stuff sounds like rap to odd music to me...

So I guess it just depends on what type of voice and music you like...
