My 11 year-old daughter beat my husband (who's 38 years-old with an IQ of 148) in several games of chess. Is it possible to get a rough estimate of her intelligence based on her chess abilities? If so, please tell me what her probable IQ is.

It's not even vaguely possible.

If chess calls for a mental skill, it is most frequently memory and logic. IQ tests, on the other hand, measure mostly linguistic and mathematical skills.

Consider also the phenomenon of the 'idiot savant'. Some people are remarkably good at just one thing, and it has no bearing whatsoever on the rest of their mental makeup.

Concerns over who's smarter than who and in what way are sort of like chasing dragons anyway. History values achievement, not potential. Why don't you?

No. An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) Is based on a series of tests that determine a persons knowledge and problem solving skills across a broad spectrum. The IQ is a number that compares the resulting score against the score expected for a person of average intelegence. as a percentage.
A skilled chess player may be unskilled in other areas. In fact many people with high IQs have no interest in Chess.
In addition, there is a condition known as Savant Syndrome, where an individual of average, or even sub-average IQ, performs very well on a narrow range of intellectual skills.

There are free IQ tests on line. Search for free "culture fair" iq test. If both of them never played a game of chess before or read a chess book then it would be a reasonable test. However kids REALLY like to prove themselves and out-do parents. She probably studied hard and practiced.

IQ and intelligence are not the same. IQ is just a silly way of measuring how a person solves certain types of problems. Intelligence is something completely different.

Nope. The only things those wins tell you is that sometimes she plays a better game of chess than he does. Sorry.

There isn't. That is impressive though. I once had a friend that was super dumb. He won the middle school chess tourny. He just understood the game really well. Which is impressive dumb or not.
