Perhaps something is overheating. My husband's laptop shuts down unless he has it on boards or something that allows airflow under it.
I suspect, however, that that is not your problem because the symptoms don't match, except the sudden shutdown. But maybe you've developed a short in it and that is causing heat.

I would say that is a hardware fault, probably your CPU fan not working properly, if the laptop over heats because the fan is not on it will just completely power off with no warning, you can run a diagnostics to check the fan, or just open it up and see if it is spinning.
you could also check if it is a faulty battery, there is normally a button to press on the laptop batteries that tells you how much power is in it, if it doesn't show any lights then try taking the battery out of the lapop, leave it out and then turn it on only using the mains power.
I don't think it is the power settings because it would come up with a warning just before it closes.

It almost sounds as though your battery's had it.My friend had a similar problem and the computer tech who came out gave her that diagnosis. Now she has to keep it plugged in at all times, and if it gets unplugged, it takes the same kind of action as yours to get it going again. So maybe try buying a new battery? Otherwise, if it is on, and you're able to do something, just check your Power Schemes settings under the Control Panel Folder (Windows). Good Luck!

I had a similar problem before and it was related to a Virus. My computer was thinking... and thinking.... very slow but it couldn't go for more than 4-5 minutes before turning itself off. I'll suggest you look into this before getting a new battery; I also was thinking it was the battery at the beginning since the message that was giving me mention something about it.

computers(laptops and desktops)shutdown when there is a problem with hardware or software
this is normally to stop any damage to your computer but damage very seldom happens
to stop your laptop from shutting down right click my computer>system properties>advanced>start up and recovery>untick the box that says"automatically restart"..then apply
this will stop the shutdowns but keep a eye on your laptop ,and check the vents for dust ect as it may be overheating and this is what was shutting it down
good luck

virus i most likely. could be a hardware problem as well. If all fails boot the computer with a live linux cd and back up the files you need to a flashdrive. but you can only do this if its a virus. most viruses dont affect linux. Then format the computer using dos or something.
