Depends which country you are in
Is there property to sell or divide?
Are there children to agree on contact and guardianship over?
Is there Joint loans / Banks etc?

Step by step but keeping it amicable is the cheapest way, if you both agree its over, then trying to agree on the above or anything I may have missed that needs agreeing on will speed up the process no end, which will keep the cost down.

I'm in the Uk.A divorce at its quickest and simplest will set you back around £3000.
Go to mediation rather than solicitors, but only if you cannot get her/him to agree or trust you.
You still have to get Solicitors involved to dot i's and cross t's.
Even if you both agree, and your solicitors are happy, when you apply to the court for divorce,a judge may overturn your agreement. It sucks, but alas its the law.
As soon as you involve mortgages, the house, pensions, assets, children, you start to run into more time and money to untangle things.
If you have less than £649 of disposable monthly income, you may get legal aid. This can save you say £400 in mediation, and around £150 per hour in solicitors fees, but you will end up with the rookie on the firm who is just cutting their teeth.
There is no specified time limit to a divorce,so if you both agree to everything it will be quicker naturaly.
If you are the male, then look out for visits from official agencies acting on tip offs from disgruntled ex partners. It happens.

There is really no such thing...if you don't want the drama of the other party not signing the divorce...your better off coming up with $1,500 and giving it to a divorce lawyer as a retainer fee. then sit down at home and write out all your wishes. If you get lucky and find an Attorney who like and believes in you... you'll get your wishes granted. If not..years of wasted money and hell days.

There is no such thing. you have to first file for divorce which can take several months and pay for that filing process which can run into the hundreds and then go to court for alimony and child support. Sorry hun, it's just how the system works
