Sounds like a condition called "luxating patella". Which in lay mans terms means loose knee cap. It's usually harmless, but since you say you dislocated it 1x already. Maybe you should have it x-rayed just to be on the safe side.

Cartilage chips perhaps. I injured both knees skiing down a mountain too long in the "wedge" stance, which over extended my tendons. That was in 1991. The only solution I found to deal with the pain (it still makes noise when I go up stairs) is to take some supplements:
Glucosamin Chondroitin (don't take the glucosamin if you have diabetes)
Sam-E
MSM
Hylaronic Acid
Any combination of above should help. Get fairly decent high milligrams/micrograms of each. Go to reputable vitamin store - general stores like Walmart/Target/Walgreens carry brands that can be questionable for % of ingredients and their absorb ability.
Give these supplements a FULL 90 days to be absorbed into your joints. Be consistent and take every day - even the minimal dosage that the manufacturer recommends still should be sufficient.

You should notice a good difference. If you stop taking them, the problem will reappear. Expect to take these for the rest of your life - it does beat surgery, pain, and does offset other illnesses that will eventually appear in your knees (such as arthritis in your later years). But consider this as preventative medicine.

Be easy on your joints from now on. It may be a small matter now, but by the time you're in your 40's, you will be thanking yourself if you are pro-active now about your health.

Popping joints are not always that big of a deal. While it might not hurt now, it could down the road. Go visit a doctor and get a referral to a bone and joint specialist.

I found this on about.com

"discoid meniscus is an abnormally shaped meniscus within the knee joint. The meniscus is a C-shaped wedge of cartilage that helps support and cushion the knee joint. In each knee there are two menisci, one on the inside (medial) and one on the outside (lateral) of the knee joint. In some people the lateral meniscus is shaped more like a solid disc rather than the normal C-shape. "

"In some people, the discoid meniscus can cause problems, usually a popping sensation with pain over the outside part of the knee joint. This is why some people use the phrase 'popping knee syndrome' when talking about a discoid meniscus. In these patients, conservative treatment consisting of exercises and stretching can be performed. "
"Most people with a discoid meniscus never know they have it! Many people live normal, active lives with a discoid meniscus--even high performance athletes. "

Relax bro, you will be okay. But go visit doctor to make sure!

I've dislocated my knee countless times. Now I have creaky knees too. I think that it's because you've messed it up a couple of times before. You should talk to the doc though, cuz when I did I found out I have flexible joints and am more injury prone cuz of that. Good luck! =)
