Why homework is important depends on the type of class. In some classes there is a lot of material that needs to be read and there is not enough time in class to read it. Therefore, reading needs to be done outside the class - homework. Then there are classes that you learn a procedure in class and need to practice it so you will remember it long term. Thus homework is a time to practice so you are sure you got it and to help you remember it long term. Homework can also help you realize when you thought you understood something, but you really don't. Sometimes it looks simple and makes sense when you see the teacher show you on the board in class. But there is a difference between understanding how something makes sense and knowing it. Homework can help make sure you know it.

Homework is important because it is another opportunity to expand your mind and develop as a human being. Every time you don't do your homework you are denying yourself an opportunity to learn something either about the subject you are studying or about yourself and your reactions to it. Don't shortchange yourself and your future by failing to do your homework. You will be glad you applied yourself later in life, and not just because it may offer financial rewards. Those are secondary considerations. Do it because it will make you a more well rounded person. But remember to also play at appropriate times. Too much work causes stress, which deprives the mind of the mental energy it needs to learn and grow.

I can answer this question from the point of view of a student, as well as the point of view of a parent. Homework is important because it is part of teaching your brain how to learn. Making your brain work the way you want it to is an on-going process, and you have to train it thoroughly just as an athlete trains his or her body to produce expected results.
